Vietjet Air will launch direct flights from Western Sydney International Airport to Ho Chi Minh City in January 2027, expanding travel options between Australia and Vietnam as Sydney’s newest airport begins building its international network.

The Vietnamese budget carrier has opened ticket sales for the route, with one-way fares starting at A$299. Vietjet will initially operate two flights per week before increasing the service to three weekly departures in March 2027.

The new connection is expected to serve leisure travelers as well as passengers visiting friends and relatives, particularly within Western Sydney’s large Vietnamese-Australian community.

Vietjet Schedules First Western Sydney Flight for January

Vietjet’s first flight between Western Sydney International Airport, also known as Nancy-Bird Walton Airport, and Ho Chi Minh City is scheduled for Sunday, January 10, 2027.

Flights will initially operate every Sunday and Wednesday. The airline plans to introduce a third weekly service in March, although the operating day for that additional flight has not yet been announced.

Vietjet will use Airbus A330 aircraft configured with 377 seats, providing substantial passenger capacity from the route’s launch. Under the published schedule, the aircraft will arrive at WSI at 10 a.m. before departing for Ho Chi Minh City at 12:05 p.m.

The service will give residents of Western Sydney a direct connection to Vietnam without requiring travel to Sydney Kingsford Smith Airport. That could reduce surface travel times for passengers living in the city’s western suburbs and surrounding areas.

Route Targets Strong Australia-Vietnam Travel Market

Passenger demand between New South Wales and Vietnam has grown into a significant travel market. More than 500,000 people traveled between the Australian state and Vietnam in 2025.

Western Sydney is also home to more than 70,000 people of Vietnamese heritage, creating a sizable potential customer base for year-round travel. The route is likely to attract demand for family visits alongside tourism and business trips.

Vietjet already operates direct Australian services, and the WSI route will extend its reach into one of the country’s fastest-growing population regions.

Bangkok Service Planned for November 2027

Vietjet’s Western Sydney expansion is also expected to include Thailand. Vietjet Thailand plans to begin four weekly flights between WSI and Bangkok in November 2027, subject to regulatory approval.

Detailed schedules for the proposed Bangkok route will be released closer to the planned start of service. If approved, the flights would add another direct Southeast Asian destination to Western Sydney International’s developing network.

The new airport began cargo operations on July 27, 2026, and is scheduled to open for passenger flights on October 25. Vietjet will be among its early international airlines, joining planned services from carriers including Singapore Airlines and Air New Zealand.

The additional routes are intended to establish WSI as a second major international gateway for Greater Sydney while improving airport access for travelers in western parts of the metropolitan area.

Promotional Discount Available on Selected Vietjet Fares

To support the Western Sydney announcement, Vietjet has introduced a limited-time promotion offering a 20% discount on base fares in its Deluxe, SkyBoss and Business classes on direct Australian routes.

Customers can access the offer by using the promotional code VJAUS20. The campaign runs from August 10 until 2 a.m. Australian Eastern Standard Time on August 17, 2026.

Eligible travel dates extend from September 7, 2026, through March 31, 2027. However, the discount does not apply during peak travel seasons, public holidays or Lunar New Year periods.

NSW Government Fund Supports New Route

The Ho Chi Minh City service is receiving support from the New South Wales Government through the Western Sydney International Take-Off Fund.

The A$16 million program was established to attract airlines and international routes to the new airport during its early operating period. Vietjet’s planned service represents another step toward building WSI’s international passenger network and strengthening direct connections between Western Sydney and major Asian destinations.
