Chicago Carrier Says It Has No Interest in Boeing’s Undelivered Widebody Jets
United Airlines has dismissed reports that it is considering purchasing a group of early-built Boeing 777X aircraft originally intended for Emirates, ending speculation that the Chicago-based carrier could become the first U.S. airline to operate Boeing’s delayed next-generation widebody.
The rumors centered on up to 20 Boeing 777X aircraft assembled between 2019 and 2021 for Emirates but never accepted after years of certification delays. As Boeing continues working toward regulatory approval of the aircraft, questions had emerged over whether another airline could acquire the undelivered jets.
United confirmed it has no plans to add the aircraft to its fleet, reinforcing its current long-term fleet strategy and leaving the future of the early-built airframes uncertain.
United Ends Speculation Over Boeing 777X Acquisition
Industry speculation intensified after reports suggested United Airlines could acquire the aircraft that Emirates declined to accept. Such a move would have positioned United as the launch operator of these early-built Boeing 777X aircraft in the United States.
However, the airline has now ruled out the possibility.
The aircraft have remained undelivered due to prolonged certification delays affecting Boeing’s flagship widebody program. According to aviation industry reports, Boeing continues progressing toward certification while determining the future of aircraft that have been in storage for several years.
United’s decision effectively closes the door on one of the most discussed scenarios surrounding the delayed aircraft program.
Why Emirates Declined Delivery
Aging Aircraft Became a Key Concern
The Boeing 777X aircraft in question were manufactured years before the program was ready for commercial service.
As certification timelines slipped repeatedly, the completed aircraft remained parked in storage awaiting regulatory approval. By the time deliveries appeared closer, Emirates decided not to accept the earliest production aircraft.
Emirates President Sir Tim Clark criticized the aircraft, comparing them to “a can of baked beans” because they had been sitting for years before entering airline service.
The airline argued that accepting aircraft already six to seven years old would shorten their useful operational lifespan and require extensive inspections, modifications, and upgrades before entering service.
Instead, Emirates has indicated it prefers aircraft built much closer to their eventual delivery dates, reducing the need for additional work before they join the fleet.
United Continues Its Existing Widebody Strategy
Rather than introducing the Boeing 777X, United is continuing to invest in aircraft already central to its long-term network strategy.
The carrier operates one of the world’s largest Boeing widebody fleets and has increasingly relied on the Boeing 787 Dreamliner family to support international expansion.
The Dreamliner’s combination of fuel efficiency, lower operating costs, and operational flexibility has allowed United to launch long-haul routes that may not require the higher seating capacity offered by larger aircraft.
Recent additions to the airline’s international network include flights to Adelaide Airport in Australia and New Chitose Airport in Sapporo, Japan, destinations well suited to the capabilities of the Boeing 787.
Maintaining fleet commonality also reduces pilot training requirements, maintenance complexity, and operational costs, making the airline’s decision consistent with its broader fleet planning strategy.
Future of the Early-Built Boeing 777X Aircraft Remains Uncertain
Although United has declined the opportunity, the aircraft are not necessarily destined to remain in storage permanently.
Before any airline can take delivery, Boeing must complete required upgrades, bring the aircraft to current production standards, and secure full certification for the 777X program.
Because the aircraft have already been assembled, another airline could potentially receive them sooner than waiting for newly produced aircraft once the necessary modifications are complete.
So far, however, no airline has publicly announced plans to acquire these specific airframes.
Boeing Continues Progress Toward Certification
Delayed Program Advances Through Testing
The Boeing 777X remains one of the aviation industry’s most delayed commercial aircraft programs.
Originally expected to enter passenger service in 2020, the aircraft is now projected to begin commercial operations in 2027 following years of engineering revisions, regulatory scrutiny, and certification delays.
Despite the setbacks, Boeing has continued expanding its flight test campaign.
According to the manufacturer, the certification program has accumulated more than 4,800 flight test hours across more than 1,700 test flights.
The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration has also authorized Boeing to move into Phase 4B certification testing, a stage that evaluates avionics, flight controls, aircraft stability, and other critical onboard systems before final approval can be granted.
The prolonged development timeline has also increased costs for Boeing, which must update aircraft built years ago to match current production standards before they can be delivered.
Strong Customer Demand Continues
Despite the extended delays, airlines continue to show confidence in the Boeing 777X program.
Emirates remains the aircraft’s largest customer, with an order book exceeding 270 aircraft. The airline intends to use the 777X as a long-term replacement for portions of its Airbus A380 fleet.
Other carriers awaiting deliveries include Qatar Airways, Lufthansa, Cathay Pacific, and Cargolux, all of which continue to incorporate the next-generation widebody into their long-term fleet modernization plans.
While United Airlines has removed itself from speculation surrounding the early-built aircraft, Boeing’s progress toward certification means the possibility remains that another airline could eventually acquire the modified airframes once they are updated and approved for commercial service.
