Critics see the Tunis deal as the reason

Critics say the recent abuses are the result of the Tunis deal. The European Union and Tunisia recently concluded agreements to combat illegal immigration. Many people try to travel to Europe through the North African country. But critics say that since that deal, Tunisia would have pushed more migrants into the desert.

The Netherlands played an important role in concluding this deal. The outgoing government was already asked last week to respond to the stranded group. A State Department spokesperson said at the time: “The Cabinet believes that combating illegal immigration must be humane, orderly and consistent with international law and human rights.” The spokeswoman emphasized that the Netherlands will continue to stress the importance of human rights, including within the European Union.

Tunisia has always denied these allegations. Then the news agency Reuters Asked early this month how people got there, a company spokesperson said that “people who meet the conditions for legal entry into Tunisia” will be accepted. Tunisia is not responsible for what happens outside its borders.”
