From lane 7, Bonevacia started his strength and was the first to pass the baton to Klaver, who was unable to hold onto the lead and slipped back to fourth. With an impressive acceleration, Paul once again advanced to first place. Angela looked like he was going to get a medal, but he stopped completely in the last meters.

Paul’s presence in the final was remarkable. She is the Dutch fastest in the 400m, but after the 400m hurdles series on Saturday morning, she said she would not start in the mixed 4x400m. However it was lined up.

Dutch athletics medals are rare. Daphne Schippers won the silver in the 200 meters in Rio de Janeiro five years ago and 24 years ago the Netherlands won trophies in the track and field. Elaine van Langen wins gold in the 800m during the Barcelona Games.

The outcome of this particular relay in Tokyo is still tentative, as various countries (including the Netherlands) are protesting against America’s acceptance of the final. Team USA was initially disqualified due to an illegal substitution on Friday in the series, but was allowed to participate and took second place. So excluding America could lead to a bronze medal for the Netherlands.
