Alonso is the new coach of the Uruguayan football team

10:13 a.m. Diego Alonso is the new national coach of the Uruguay national football team. He succeeds Oscar Tabarez, who was sacked last month after more than fifteen years.

The 46-year-old has played as a footballer for Valencia and Atletico Madrid, among others, has played eight internationals for Uruguay, and coached Mexican club Pachuca and Inter Miami of the United States.

Alonso should take Uruguay to next year’s World Cup in Qatar. Uruguay is seventh in World Cup qualifiers, with four rounds remaining. The top four teams go to the World Cup, and player No. 5 gets a second chance in the Intercontinental Playoffs.

Benfica resumes coach Jesus’ ban

It’s 07:43 Benfica has lodged an appeal against Jorge Jesus’ 15-day suspension. The moody coach strongly criticized the referee on May 6 after a duel with FC Porto (1-1). The Portuguese Football Federation’s disciplinary committee found seven months later that they still had to be punished for this.

Benfica does not agree with the ruling and does not understand why the disciplinary committee has reached a ruling only now. Benfica will play against Porto twice this month, in the league and cup.
