OOSTKAPELLE – Where other retirees sit their time, Rob de Waijer (82) can be found every Wednesday at the ice rink. After completing three rounds in Eleven Cities, he still can’t get enough of the sport. For example, he just got back from Austria where he skied on the Weissensee.
Rob has now lived in Zealand for 46 years with his wife Joke. From his apartment in Oostkapelle, he looked back on ‘t Gooi, the place where they both grew up. “In the past there was snow almost every winter, then it was always skiing. Usually this sport is kept within the family, because my son and grandchildren ski too.”
I usually go to Sweden with my sons to ski on the weekends, but my son was afraid to fly, so we went to Weisensee. Nice too…the weather was great and I had a great time. In addition, I ski with a group of seniors every Wednesday in Breda. It’s also about having fun, I always have a goal in mind. Right now I’m trying to skate 65 laps every time we go.”
