QantasLink is preparing to upgrade its Sunshine Coast services with the introduction of next-generation Airbus A220 aircraft, marking a major step in the airline’s fleet renewal strategy and its push toward more sustainable air travel.

Starting in February 2026, the regional carrier will begin operating the new A220s on flights between the Sunshine Coast and Sydney and Melbourne. The aircraft will replace older Boeing 737s currently used on these popular routes, promising travelers a more comfortable and environmentally efficient flying experience.

    A Strategic Fleet Upgrade

The deployment is part of QantasLink’s larger renewal program, which includes integrating 29 Airbus A220s into its operations alongside a standardized fleet of Q400 turboprops. According to the airline, the move is designed to improve service reliability, lower per-seat emissions, and deliver greater customer satisfaction.

Qantas has already received six A220s and expects delivery of seven more before the end of this financial year. The Sunshine Coast routes represent one of the first major regional expansions for the new aircraft type.

“The A220s, starting in February 2026, mark a significant step forward for sustainability and passenger experience on routes to Sydney and Melbourne,” said Chris Mills, CEO of Sunshine Coast Airport. “We’re excited to see these aircraft support the growing demand for travel in our region.”

    A Passenger-Focused Design

The Airbus A220 has quickly become a customer favorite across QantasLink’s network, achieving the highest satisfaction ratings of any aircraft in the domestic fleet in recent months. Designed by Australian industrial designer David Caon, the interiors feature custom leather seating with added pitch and width, ambient LED lighting, and generous overhead compartments for carry-on baggage.

The aircraft is also equipped with free high-speed Wi-Fi, a feature that has become increasingly popular with domestic travelers. Noise levels are significantly reduced compared with the Boeing 737s, creating a calmer cabin environment.

From a sustainability standpoint, the A220 delivers tangible improvements, emitting up to 25% less carbon dioxide than older aircraft. It also generates less noise pollution, making it more compatible with growing regional airports like Sunshine Coast that are seeing higher traffic volumes.

“Our customers love flying on the new A220s, and this expansion means more travellers can enjoy their comfort when flying to and from the Sunshine Coast,” said Rachel Yangoyan, CEO of QantasLink. “These aircraft are not only more comfortable but also quieter and more sustainable, supporting our goal of reaching net zero emissions.”

    Responding to Regional Growth

The Sunshine Coast has become one of Queensland’s fastest-growing aviation markets, with passenger demand climbing steadily as the region expands its tourism, business, and residential base. QantasLink’s decision to assign A220s to the airport underscores both the commercial importance of the route and the carrier’s intention to compete more aggressively with rival airlines in the region.

The introduction of the new aircraft will involve modest schedule adjustments, as the airline transitions capacity from older models. While the company has not disclosed specific flight frequencies, it said the changes are intended to streamline service and ensure long-term operational efficiency.

For Sunshine Coast Airport, the deployment adds momentum to its own expansion strategy. The airport has invested heavily in infrastructure in recent years, including runway upgrades, with an eye toward attracting new-generation aircraft capable of delivering both higher capacity and better environmental performance.

    Balancing Comfort and Sustainability

The A220 program is central to Qantas Group’s broader sustainability strategy. The airline has committed to achieving net zero emissions by 2050 and has positioned fleet renewal as one of the most direct levers for meeting interim reduction targets.

“This upgrade reflects QantasLink’s commitment to modernizing its fleet, prioritizing customer satisfaction, and advancing sustainability,” Yangoyan said.

For passengers, the changes will be most visible in the form of a modernized cabin environment, improved connectivity, and a quieter ride. For the company, the A220 represents a more fuel-efficient platform capable of meeting both commercial and environmental demands in the decade ahead.

As Sunshine Coast Airport’s Mills noted, the A220s are also well-matched to the region’s long-term growth. “The introduction of these aircraft will support not only the increased demand for travel but also the community’s desire for greener, quieter flights,” he said.

    Looking Ahead

By February 2026, travelers on the Sunshine Coast–Sydney and Sunshine Coast–Melbourne routes will be among the first to experience the new A220s as part of their regular service. The shift underscores the changing face of regional aviation in Australia, where airlines are increasingly tasked with balancing customer expectations, operational reliability, and climate responsibilities.

For QantasLink, the Sunshine Coast launch is both a symbolic and strategic milestone — signaling that the A220 is not just a fleet replacement, but a key platform for the carrier’s future.
