Police Chief Roberto Brady noted that crime in Suriname, with respect to certain criminal offenses, was showing a declining trend. At a press conference on Wednesday, the statistics were presented and made available to the media with the aim of informing the community about the situation.

The police chief acknowledges that some forms of crime are showing a slight increase, but overall he sees a downward trend. Statistics are presented from 2018 to the first half of 2021. Aggravated thefts in 2018, 2019, 2020 and the first half of 2021 were 3,736, 2,951, 2,712, and 1,257, respectively.
The burglaries in 2018, 2019, 2020 and the first half of 2021 were 3,965, 3,522, 2,911, and 1,747, respectively. Thefts in 2018, 2019, 2020 and the first half of 2021 were respectively 1157, 976, 586 and 200. And 2019, 2020 and the first half of 2021365, 325, 241, and 94, respectively.
The deaths in 2018, 2019, 2020 and the first half of 2021 were 38, 30, 53 and 19, respectively, and the suicides in 2018, 2019, 2020 and the first half of 2021 were 31, 64, 54 and 55, respectively.
Road traffic deaths in 2018, 2019, 2020 and the first half of 2021 were 76, 82, 76 and 46, respectively.
