The European Union should act as a mediator between Iran and the United States to save the 2015 nuclear deal. Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif opposes this CNN International He said.

According to Zarif, the high representative for European foreign policy, Joseph Borrell, should act as mediator. As the coordinator of the joint committee overseeing the deal, he can determine “the measures that the United States will take and the measures that Iran will take.”

The nuclear deal was signed in 2015 by Iran, the United States, the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Russia, China and the European Union. Its purpose was to curtail Iran’s nuclear program. Former US President Donald Trump decided in May 2018 to withdraw his country from the agreement unilaterally and to re-impose sanctions on Iran. His successor, Joe Biden, had already said that he wanted to return to the agreement that came under President Barack Obama.

US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken said on Monday that Iran is “only weeks away from developing nuclear weapons materials.”

Iran believes that the United States should take the first step to reach an agreement to lift sanctions on Iran.
