The remains of at least five hundred horses have been found on a farm in rural Australia. The bodies were found after neighbors complained about the smell. Several authorities, including the police, opened an investigation.
Large numbers of dead horses have been found spread across a plot of land in the town of Wagga Wagga, halfway between Sydney and Melbourne. “Some of the bodies were only skeletal remains, while other horses were killed relatively recently,” the municipality reported.
Now only in public places
Mayor Peter Thompson visited the site with other authorities last month, but the matter has only been announced now. “There were at least two hundred dead horses in some of the piles,” he says. “It was a confronting experience.”

According to the municipal director, those involved were aware of his arrival, “because attempts were made to cover the remains with dirt.” Horses may have been illegally slaughtered on the property, but Thompson would not confirm that.
