Regulator Issues Mandatory Airworthiness Directive Covering 737 MAX Fleet
The US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has ordered mandatory inspections of 471 Boeing 737 MAX aircraft following concerns about a potential structural issue involving supports near the forward galley door area.
The new airworthiness directive applies to Boeing 737-8, 737-9, and 737-8200 aircraft registered in the United States and will take effect on September 10, 2026. The FAA said the action is intended to identify possible structural weaknesses before they can develop into a safety concern.
The directive follows reports of cracks found on Boeing 737 Next Generation (NG) aircraft with similar structural designs. While no cracks have been identified on the Boeing 737 MAX fleet, the FAA said inspections are necessary because the aircraft share important design and manufacturing characteristics with earlier 737 models.
The move comes as Boeing continues efforts to improve production quality and rebuild confidence among regulators and airlines following years of increased oversight.
FAA Targets Bear Strap Structure Near Forward Galley Door
The FAA’s final directive focuses on a structural support component known as the bear strap, located near the upper corner of the forward galley door cutout.
According to the regulator, cracks in this area could potentially grow over time and extend into the aircraft fuselage skin. If left undetected, the damage could reduce the airplane’s ability to withstand certified structural loads.
The inspections will cover 471 US-registered Boeing 737 MAX aircraft, including the 737-8, 737-9, and high-density 737-8200 variants.
Airlines operating affected aircraft must inspect the specified structural area and complete any required repairs if damage is discovered. The FAA said the inspection process provides multiple opportunities to identify and correct potential issues before they become significant safety risks.
The agency emphasized that the directive is a preventive measure designed to maintain continued airworthiness across the fleet.
Boeing Supports Inspection Program Extension
Boeing said it has been working with airline operators on the issue for approximately six years after similar cracking was discovered on older Boeing 737 Next Generation aircraft.
The manufacturer said the FAA directive expands an existing inspection program and is not the result of failures identified on Boeing 737 MAX aircraft currently in service.
According to Boeing, no cracking has been found on operating 737 MAX aircraft. However, because the MAX family shares comparable structural features and manufacturing processes with previous-generation aircraft, the company supports extending the inspection requirements.
Boeing also confirmed that engineering investigations have identified the root cause of the cracking mechanism.
The company is developing permanent design improvements expected to remove the issue from future production aircraft while continuing to support inspection efforts for aircraft already in airline service.
Airlines Face Additional Regulatory Checks
The latest FAA action follows another regulatory move issued in late July, when the agency proposed inspections of seat installations on hundreds of Boeing 737 MAX aircraft to confirm they were installed correctly.
The series of directives reflects the FAA’s increased focus on preventive maintenance and early detection rather than responding only after problems appear during airline operations.
Aviation intelligence firm IBA estimates that around 2,300 Boeing 737 MAX aircraft are currently operating worldwide, including approximately 823 aircraft in the United States.
Airlines outside the US are expected to monitor developments closely, as international aviation regulators often adopt FAA airworthiness directives for aircraft operated within their jurisdictions.
In the Middle East, flydubai remains among the largest Boeing 737 MAX operators, with a significant fleet of 737 MAX 8 aircraft and additional deliveries planned. Boeing has not confirmed whether operators outside the United States will immediately follow the same inspection schedule.
Boeing Continues Quality Improvement Efforts
The inspection order arrives as Boeing continues efforts to strengthen manufacturing standards under CEO Kelly Ortberg following heightened regulatory scrutiny.
The company has faced increased attention since the January 2024 Alaska Airlines Boeing 737 MAX 9 door plug accident, which led regulators to intensify reviews of Boeing’s production processes and quality controls.
While the latest FAA directive does not involve confirmed defects on Boeing 737 MAX aircraft, the inspection requirement highlights the aviation industry’s growing emphasis on proactive safety measures and maintaining public confidence in commercial aircraft operations.
