Matteo Arnaldi had already helped the Italian tennis players beat Australia in the Davis Cup final on Sunday. He was stronger than Alexei Popyrin in Malaga in three sets: 7-5, 2-6, 6-4. Jannik Sinner was then able to help Italy win the final in the second singles match. He defeated Alex de Minaur with superior force. Therefore, the decisive duel in doubles is no longer necessary in the final battle.

De Minaur had no answer to Sinner’s ferocious serves and forehand. The Australian fought for what he deserved, but during the second set of the final battle, he increasingly felt he had no chance.

Athim unleashed his emotions after his decisive victory. He celebrated the victory with his teammates and waved the Italian flag. Then he thanked the Italian fans in the stands. “You have been incredibly supportive of us. It is great to have won this title together. We could not have finished the season in a better way.”

    A sinner in great form

Sinner has been in fantastic form in recent days. He played an important role in the victories over the Netherlands in the quarter-finals and Serbia in the semi-finals. Sinner defeated Novak Djokovic in singles and doubles on Saturday. Italy escaped with three match points against Serbia, but was present again in the final on Sunday. Australia, which defeated the Czech Republic in the semi-finals on Friday, had a day off before the final day.

Italy has not won the Davis Cup until now until 1976, that is, 47 years ago. Australia has already been the best in the tournament for national teams 28 times. The Australians were able to win the Davis Cup for the first time in twenty years, but they did not succeed. In 2003 they were too strong for Spain on a grass track in Melbourne.

Last year, Australia lost 2-0 to Canada in the final, which had Denis Shapovalov and Felix Auger-Aliassime at their disposal. They have been missing in Spain this year.
