Microsoft used to do this with Windows, but has since stopped. With Ubuntu, users still get a major update twice a year, which brings with it many innovations. Ubuntu 24.04 is brand new as the final release.
Ubuntu has stayed true to its codename thing this time around, too: the new Ubuntu has the creative moniker “Noble Numbat.”” – So the “noble nombat”, which in turn is a small Australian marsupial.
Ubuntu will be interesting next year at the latest for everyone who is still using Windows 10 but doesn't want to switch to Windows 11. Windows 10 will remain supported until October 2025, after which you will have to pay for security updates.
The special thing about Nomble Numbat: It's a Long Term Support (LTS) release. You're guaranteed to receive updates for five years, so you're on the safe side with Ubuntu 24.04 until mid-June 2029.
But it gets better, as you can get Ubuntu Pro updates for 10 years, that is, until 2034. For private users, this is free for up to five installations. Enterprise customers can still purchase an additional two years of support, but it won't finally end until 2036.
