Inaugural Flight Arrives in Tbilisi With 98% Passenger Load Factor
TBILISI, Georgia — China Eastern Airlines has launched the first scheduled nonstop passenger service between Shanghai and Tbilisi, marking a significant development in air connectivity between China and Georgia and opening new opportunities for tourism, trade, and investment.
The inaugural flight from Shanghai Pudong International Airport (PVG) arrived at Tbilisi International Airport (TBS) with a reported 98% passenger load factor, highlighting strong demand for the new route from the outset.
The new service, operated by China Eastern Airlines, will run three times a week and represents the first regular nonstop air connection between Georgia’s capital and Shanghai, one of China’s most important economic and financial centers.
Georgian officials described the launch as a milestone for the country’s aviation sector and a key step in strengthening ties with one of Asia’s largest markets.
New Route Expands Georgia’s International Aviation Network
The inaugural flight was welcomed at Tbilisi International Airport by government officials, aviation industry leaders, and representatives from China Eastern Airlines.
Speaking during the arrival ceremony, Georgian Economy Minister Mariam Kvrivishvili characterized the launch as a major achievement resulting from years of cooperation between Georgian authorities and Chinese partners.
According to Georgian officials, the direct connection reflects the growing strategic relationship between the two countries and converts diplomatic cooperation into tangible economic opportunities.
China Eastern will operate the Shanghai–Tbilisi service on Wednesdays, Fridays, and Sundays, providing travelers with a direct alternative to previously required connecting flights through regional hubs.
The route also establishes what Georgian authorities say is currently the longest scheduled passenger service operating from Tbilisi.
Strategic Gateway Between Europe and Asia
Officials believe the new route strengthens Georgia’s position as a transportation and aviation gateway connecting Europe and Asia.

According to government officials, the National Tourism Administration invests approximately GEL 7 million annually in marketing campaigns aimed at raising awareness of Georgia among Chinese consumers.
These initiatives promote the country’s cultural heritage, natural attractions, culinary offerings, and hospitality sector.
Industry stakeholders expect the new nonstop connection to increase inbound tourism from China while also making travel to China more convenient for Georgian residents.

China Eastern Airlines Vice President He Xiaoqun said the route received strong support from both governments and represents more than a simple expansion of air service.
According to He, the direct flights will help strengthen tourism, business cooperation, and people-to-people exchanges by connecting Shanghai directly with Georgia.
He emphasized Shanghai’s status as one of China’s leading economic centers while highlighting Georgia’s strategic geographic position at the crossroads of Europe and Asia.
The airline views the new route as an important bridge linking businesses, travelers, and cultural exchanges between the two countries.
The launch ceremony was attended by outgoing Chinese Ambassador to Georgia Zhou Qian, senior China Eastern Airlines executives, and representatives from Georgia’s aviation and airport sectors.
Their participation underscored the importance both governments and industry stakeholders place on expanding bilateral connectivity through direct air services.
