Among the more than 10,000 photos Canadian photographer Cody Evans took of some raging waves earlier this month immediately caught my eye. He manages to take a picture of a wave that appears to have a man’s face. Therefore, the striking image reminds Evans of the Greek god of the sea, Poseidon.
Over the past two years, Canadian Cody Evans has regularly traveled to Lake Erie in the Canadian province of Ontario to take pictures of the waves. Earlier this month, a nature photographer wanted to snap some new photos. “It was very cold, -11 degrees or so,” he told the Canadian Press. “I noticed the water and as soon as there were waves, I took a series of pictures.” According to Evans, the waves were twenty feet high that day.
When the photographer reviewed his photos moments later, he noticed that one of the waves appeared to have a face. “It really overwhelmed me. You often see all kinds of things in waves and clouds, but it was surreal to have it so clearly visible on screen. That picture definitely stood out,” Evans said.

But how can this phenomenon be explained? According to Canadian meteorologist Daniel Liotta, the giant wave is due to the “November winds”. These storms over marine areas with a force of more than 64 km / h. “The Great Lakes are relatively warm at this time of year compared to the air above. This leads to severe storms on the water,” he told Canada’s CBC. “Because of the strong winds, there are of course more waves. But the expert assures that this phenomenon is not rare: “She comes back every year.”
Evans is determined to deliver more impressive images. “I’ll hold a camera in my hand until I can’t hold it anymore, I really like it.”
