    According to the Moroccan press, the construction of the tunnel will take five years, and thus it could be completed in time for the 2030 World Cup, but in reality, the beginning of the active phase of this project is still far away, according to reports. information. No concrete action has been taken since March of this year, when Spanish Transport Minister Oscar Puente spoke with his Moroccan counterpart in Rabat about this issue. The two sides agreed to hold a meeting of the Spanish-Moroccan Joint Committee soon to take final decisions on this project. The last meeting of this committee was held in April 2023 via video conference technology.

    The project includes the construction of two single-lane railway tunnels with a circular cross-section with an internal diameter of 7.90 metres, separated by a service and safety corridor with a diameter of 6 meters and cross connections with a diameter of 6 meters every 340 metres. The total length of the tunnel is 38.5 kilometers, of which 27.7 kilometers are underwater. The tunnel will strengthen trade relations between Spain and Morocco and between Europe and Africa.
