Swimmers stroll downtown in a swimsuit – bikini or topless – during the summer months: sometimes it’s not very appetizing. This is why Blankenberge will introduce a dress code, just like Knokke-Heist. In Zeedijk and Blankenberg Beach you are allowed to take off your clothes.
“We’re not just going to issue fines,” Mayor Daphne Domery says. “You will be warned first.” The council will put up warning signs. Those who do not want to listen or risk a 350 euro fine.
The new police law has been approved by the city council and will come into effect on July 1. “But only those who really inconvenience will get the ticket,” Mayor Domery said. “Some visitors literally walked down the shopping streets right after they took a dip in the sea, and it’s not really clean. It’s mainly about these kinds of situations.”
The regulation applies only to the city center and does not apply to children under 12 years of age. We will not only impose fines. You will be warned first, Domery adds. “The city’s topless has always been a thorn in the side of many other people, residents and visitors alike.”
