National coach Gregg Berhalter’s side defended a 3-0 lead in the first leg of their UEFA Nations League quarter-final match with Trinidad and Tobago. Thanks to the small defeat, the US national team qualified for the semi-finals, which also meant qualification for the Copa America.
After Anthony Robinson’s 1-0 win, nothing seemed to go wrong for the USA, but things got even more interesting after a red card from the PSV Eindhoven Dest defender in the 39th minute. The PSV Eindhoven defender couldn’t control himself after the refereeing decision and was booked twice.
Dest was sent off after initially receiving a yellow card for shooting the ball and then continuing to protest to the referee about it. This earned him a second yellow card a few seconds later. Dest’s behavior led to angry reactions from many of his teammates.
National coach Berhalter also did not understand the 23-year-old former Ajax player, who was born in Almere. “He made a number of the boys do extra work and that is unforgivable. This was clearly not the right answer from Serginho.
Dest apologized himself on social media. “I would like to apologize to my teammates, staff and all fans for my behaviour. It was unacceptable, selfish and immature. I have let my team down. It is something I must learn from and will not happen again.
PSV Eindhoven striker Ricardo Pepe, who made it 1-0 in the first leg on Thursday, played 65 minutes. He was replaced by midfielder Malik Thielemann, his teammate at PSV Eindhoven.
The United States can participate in the Copa America Championship for the fifth time, which was originally for South American countries. The tournament will be held in the United States starting June 20.
This is not the first time that Dest has received a red card in a United States shirt. Last June, the defender was expelled from the field after a major argument during the international match against Mexico.
