Scammers have developed a treacherous scam to steal the money of both Android and iOS users. According to the report of security experts from “Eset”, this method has been promoted since the beginning of 2021 and has increased since then. Criminals place apps on websites that look like cryptocurrency wallets. These are often oriented towards real providers in terms of appearance alone.
However, malware runs in the background. Once users have downloaded and launched the applications, the seeds of the cryptocurrency can be read and stolen. The seed is a string of words that acts as a password for the wallet. If the wallet is lost, users can access it again at any time.
Mainly users in Asia are targeted. However, this tactic can also be implemented in all other regions.
On iOS and Android: Crypto Users at Risk
Security experts have found more than a dozen of these apps in recent months. These are usually found on external websites and not in app stores. However, the Play Store for Android users is particularly vulnerable to fake apps, as the past few months have shown. So users should be careful here too. Scammers often copy the code of the original applications, making them visually identical.
Protect yourself by never downloading apps from questionable websites. If you don’t know the page or you suddenly land on another page via an ad banner, leave it again. It is better to rely on our download area or the app stores on iOS and Android.
