Carrier Aligns Refund Rules With Federal Minimum, Narrowing Flexibility for Travelers

American Airlines has quietly revised its 24-hour refund policy, limiting eligibility for full cash refunds on tickets purchased close to departure and bringing its policy into line with the minimum requirements established by federal regulators.

The change means travelers booking flights fewer than seven days before departure will no longer qualify for a full refund to their original form of payment if they cancel within 24 hours of purchase. Previously, the Fort Worth-based airline allowed refunds on tickets purchased up to two days before departure, offering customers greater flexibility than federal rules required.

The policy revision leaves Delta Air Lines as the major U.S. carrier with the most flexible 24-hour refund terms for customers making last-minute bookings.

What Changed in American Airlines’ Refund Policy

The policy update was first identified by aviation publication View from the Wing and later confirmed by One Mile at a Time (OMAAT) after American Airlines updated its customer-facing policies.

Under the airline’s previous rules, customers could cancel a reservation within 24 hours of purchase and receive a full refund to their original payment method as long as the ticket had been purchased at least two days before departure.

That provision has now been removed.

Under the revised policy, passengers are eligible for a full refund within 24 hours of booking only if the ticket was purchased at least seven days before the scheduled departure date. Travelers booking inside that seven-day window no longer qualify for a no-penalty cash refund during the first 24 hours after purchase.

The change applies regardless of fare type, provided all other refund conditions are met.

    Updated Customer Refund Guidelines

American Airlines has also updated its customer service guidance to reflect the revised policy.

According to the airline’s published terms, customers may receive a refund if:

    • The ticket is canceled within 24 hours of the initial purchase.
    • The booking was made at least seven days before departure.
    • The passenger actively cancels the reservation within the eligible period.

The airline also notes that tickets purchased through travel agencies or third-party booking platforms must be refunded by the original seller rather than by American Airlines.

Additionally, reservations booked as part of group travel blocks remain excluded from the 24-hour refund policy.

    Policy Now Mirrors Federal Requirements

The revised policy closely matches regulations established by the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT).

Federal rules require airlines serving U.S. consumers to provide passengers with a 24-hour refund option when tickets are purchased at least seven days before departure. Airlines may either allow free cancellation within 24 hours or place the reservation on hold without payment for the same period.

For years, several major airlines—including American Airlines—went beyond those minimum standards by extending refund eligibility to bookings made closer to departure.

With the latest update, American has eliminated that additional flexibility and now follows the federal baseline rather than exceeding it.

    Cash Refunds Versus Travel Credits

While the revision reduces access to immediate cash refunds, it does not eliminate all cancellation flexibility.

Many fare types continue to qualify for travel credits instead of refunds. Those credits generally remain valid for 12 months from the date the original ticket was issued, allowing travelers to apply the value toward future travel.

As a result, passengers willing to accept airline credit may experience less impact from the policy change than those who require their payment returned to the original method.

Delta Maintains Broader Protection for Last-Minute Travelers

Among the largest U.S. airlines, Delta Air Lines continues to offer one of the most customer-friendly approaches for travelers booking close to departure.

Delta’s policy allows eligible passengers to cancel within 24 hours of purchase and receive a full refund even when tickets are booked less than seven days before departure, including bookings made the day before a scheduled flight.

For travelers who prefer flying American Airlines but want additional protection when making last-minute reservations, some online travel agencies offer their own cancellation guarantees.

Expedia, for example, provides certain bookings with a 24-hour cancellation window that may apply even when the airline’s own policy does not. However, cancellation terms vary by booking platform, and travelers should carefully review the agency’s refund conditions before completing a purchase.

    Impact on Travelers

American Airlines has historically been viewed as offering relatively flexible booking policies for both paid and award travel. By narrowing its 24-hour refund eligibility, the carrier removes one feature that previously provided additional peace of mind for customers making last-minute travel decisions.

For travelers purchasing tickets six days or fewer before departure, the change means there is no longer a guaranteed 24-hour cash refund option directly through the airline. Customers uncertain about their travel plans may need to rely on travel credits, book through agencies offering broader cancellation protections, or consider carriers that continue to provide more generous refund policies for last-minute bookings.
