Industrial Action Affects Etihad Services Between Tel Aviv and Abu Dhabi

TEL AVIV — Etihad Airways cancelled one flight, restricted passenger numbers on another and reported delays across its Tel Aviv-Abu Dhabi route after an unexpected workers’ strike disrupted check-in and ground-handling operations at Ben Gurion International Airport on August 20.

The labour action occurred during a particularly busy period at Israel’s main international airport, which was handling approximately 100,000 passengers and 600 flights during the day. Although airport services began recovering after about an hour, the stoppage caused flight delays, cancellations and baggage-handling complications for Etihad and other carriers.

Etihad cancelled Flight EY608 from Tel Aviv to Abu Dhabi. Flight EY594 operated with a restricted number of passengers because of significant operational constraints at Ben Gurion Airport.

The disruption also delayed Flight EY597 from Abu Dhabi to Tel Aviv and Flight EY598 from Tel Aviv to Abu Dhabi. Etihad attributed the operational problems to “unplanned industrial action” affecting multiple airlines at the airport.

Passengers Advised to Monitor Flight Information

Etihad advised affected travellers to confirm their flight status before leaving for the airport. Customers were also encouraged to ensure their telephone numbers and email addresses were current through the airline’s Manage My Booking platform.

Accurate contact information allows Etihad to communicate schedule changes and other operational instructions directly to passengers. The airline’s services were not affected uniformly, with some flights cancelled, others delayed and at least one operating with a reduced passenger load.

The situation highlighted how quickly airline schedules can be disrupted when essential ground services become unavailable. Check-in, baggage processing, aircraft loading and passenger boarding depend on coordinated airport operations, leaving carriers with limited alternatives during an unexpected work stoppage.

Etihad operates a direct connection between Ben Gurion Airport and Abu Dhabi International Airport, providing passengers with access to the airline’s wider international network through the United Arab Emirates.

Ben Gurion Workers Halt Check-In Operations

The disruption began when employees from four ground-service companies reportedly stopped passenger-handling work. Check-in counters were closed as the labour action affected services across the airport.

Airport operations were suspended at approximately 2 p.m. local time. In some cases, aircraft flying toward Tel Aviv were forced to turn back as Ben Gurion reduced its operations.

Workers cited several operational concerns, including difficulties with aircraft loading and unloading, a shortage of aircraft parking stands and broader pressure on airport infrastructure. Those problems became particularly significant because of the unusually high volume of passengers and flights passing through the facility.

Check-in counters and baggage systems gradually returned to operation from around 3 p.m. However, the earlier suspension produced a backlog that continued to affect airline schedules after normal services resumed.

Delayed baggage processing and disrupted aircraft turnaround schedules can have consequences beyond the airport where the initial incident occurs. Aircraft and crews operating behind schedule may affect later services across an airline’s network.

Strike Exposes Capacity Pressures at Israel’s Main Airport

Ben Gurion is Israel’s primary international aviation gateway, making any suspension of ground operations a significant problem for airlines, passengers, cargo companies and tourism-related businesses.

The August 20 stoppage placed renewed attention on infrastructure capacity and operational pressures at the airport. Workers’ concerns about parking stands and aircraft-handling conditions suggested that rising traffic levels were placing additional strain on available facilities.

The number of passengers scheduled to use the airport during the day also increased the potential financial consequences. Even a relatively short interruption can generate substantial costs when tens of thousands of travellers and hundreds of aircraft movements are involved.

Economic Damage Estimated at Up to $10 Million

Israel’s Finance Ministry estimated that the disruption caused between 25 million and 30 million shekels in economic damage, equivalent to approximately $8.3 million to $10 million.

The preliminary calculation included the value of passengers’ lost time, additional airline operating expenses, lower airport-related revenue and disruption to cargo and logistics services. The estimate also considered possible effects on the tourism and hospitality industries.

Airlines may incur costs from aircraft delays, crew scheduling changes, passenger rebooking and ground-handling complications. Travellers can also face expenses related to missed connections, accommodation and alternative transportation.

For passengers booked on Etihad services between Tel Aviv and Abu Dhabi, checking the latest flight information remains essential. Travellers affected by cancellations, capacity restrictions or delays should continue monitoring Etihad’s notifications and update their booking details to receive further instructions.
