Carrier Expects 75 Million Passengers During Centennial Summer Travel Season
American Airlines is preparing for the largest summer operation in its 100-year history, as the carrier ramps up flights, expands international routes, and introduces new operational improvements ahead of what is expected to be a record-breaking travel season.
The airline said it expects to carry 75 million passengers across 750,000 flights between May 21 and Sept. 8, 2026, surpassing the previous summer record established in 2019. The milestone comes during the company’s centennial year and reflects continued strength in leisure and international travel demand.
American projects that 4.2 million customers will travel on more than 40,000 flights during the Memorial Day holiday period from May 21 through May 26. Friday, May 22, is expected to be the busiest travel day of the weekend.
Key hubs supporting the expanded summer schedule include Dallas Fort Worth International Airport, Philadelphia International Airport, Chicago O’Hare International Airport, Miami International Airport and London Heathrow Airport.
Network Adjustments Aim to Improve Reliability
American Airlines said it has made several operational adjustments across its network to accommodate rising passenger traffic while improving reliability and efficiency.
At DFW, the carrier introduced a new 13-bank flight schedule designed to streamline aircraft movement and reduce congestion across the airport. According to the airline, the updated schedule has already reduced delays, lowered customer misconnects, and minimized gate changes.
The airline also reported stronger baggage handling performance and improved customer satisfaction scores during the first month of the revised schedule.
In Philadelphia, American redesigned its afternoon transatlantic departure schedule in an effort to ease congestion and provide customers with more international travel options.
Across the broader network, the airline invested in additional scheduled block time — the amount of time allocated for each flight — and said it achieved the strongest block performance among major U.S. airlines in April 2026.
Leadership Highlights Operational Readiness
Chief Operating Officer David Seymour credited the airline’s workforce for preparing the company for the busy summer season.
He described the operation as reliable, resilient, and customer-focused, while highlighting the contributions of American’s 130,000 employees in supporting the expanded schedule.
Chicago O’Hare Sees Operational Gains
American also pointed to improved performance at ORD following the Federal Aviation Administration’s move to better align flight schedules with the airport’s operational capacity.
The carrier said customers traveling through Chicago this summer should experience improved on-time performance, fewer congestion-related delays, and a more predictable travel experience.
American expects to serve more than 5.2 million passengers at Chicago O’Hare this summer, representing an 11% increase compared with 2025 and a 48% increase from 2023 levels.
Airline Expands Customer-Facing Technology
The airline has rolled out several digital upgrades aimed at improving the customer experience during the peak travel season.
The American Airlines app now includes features that explain the causes of delays and cancellations while allowing passengers to access self-service rebooking, baggage tracking, and digital travel vouchers.
American also expanded its digital wallet capabilities, becoming the first airline to support Samsung Wallet boarding passes with live updates. The carrier said its Connect Assist technology, which recommends short flight holds to preserve passenger connections, has already helped save tens of thousands of connections.
Members of the airline’s AAdvantage loyalty program continue to receive complimentary Wi-Fi sponsored by AT&T on nearly all American flights. In addition, TSA PreCheck Touchless ID is now available at 60 airports, including every American hub airport.
Travelers age 30 and younger are also eligible for a $20 discount on TSA PreCheck enrollment during May.
The airline said its One Stop Security program is now available on all flights between DFW and Heathrow, enabling eligible connecting travelers to skip baggage reclaim and additional security screening during transfers.
Chief Customer Officer Heather Garboden said the company’s investments during its centennial year are intended to create a smoother and more connected experience for passengers throughout the summer.
New European Routes Support International Expansion
American Airlines is launching five new long-haul international routes this summer as part of its broader network expansion strategy.
From Philadelphia, the airline will begin new service to Budapest Ferenc Liszt International Airport and Václav Havel Airport Prague.
DFW will gain nonstop flights to Athens International Airport and Zurich Airport, while Miami will add service to Milan Malpensa Airport.
The airline projects July 17 will be the busiest day of the summer with 6,995 scheduled flights, followed closely by July 10 with 6,991 flights.
Across the season, American said it will average approximately five departures every minute, equal to nearly 500 passengers taking off each minute.
The carrier’s top non-hub destinations this summer are expected to be Orlando International Airport, Heathrow, and Boston Logan International Airport.
American Airlines currently operates more than 6,000 daily flights to over 350 destinations in more than 60 countries and serves more than 200 million passengers annually. The airline traces its origins to a Midwestern air mail carrier founded in 1926 and remains a founding member of the oneworld alliance, which serves more than 900 destinations worldwide.
