Contractor at Charlotte Douglas International Airport Faces Felony Charges After Alleged Baggage Theft

A contractor working at Charlotte Douglas International Airport has been accused of stealing approximately $5,000 worth of jewelry from a passenger’s checked luggage and attempting to sell the items online, according to police documents and court records.

The case, which stems from an alleged theft during an April 11 layover, has drawn attention to ongoing concerns surrounding baggage security and employee access within restricted airport operations at one of the busiest aviation hubs in the United States.

Authorities identified the suspect as 22-year-old Alonys Reyes-Garcia, who was arrested on April 14 after investigators linked him to an online marketplace listing advertising jewelry matching the stolen items. Police allege the jewelry was taken from a traveler’s suitcase while it was being transferred through the airport’s baggage handling system.

    Passenger Complaint Triggered Investigation

    Missing Jewelry Reported After Layover

The investigation began after a passenger reported that several pieces of diamond jewelry were missing from her checked baggage following a layover at Charlotte Douglas International Airport.

According to police, detectives immediately began monitoring online resale platforms and social media marketplaces for listings that could match the missing items. Investigators later discovered a social media account advertising jewelry closely resembling the pieces described in the victim’s report.

Authorities said the jewelry was being offered as a bundled sale, a detail investigators considered significant because it mirrored the quantity and type of items reported stolen.

Detectives eventually traced the account to Reyes-Garcia, who worked for a contractor with access to secured baggage handling areas inside the airport. Investigators believe that access played a critical role in how the alleged theft was carried out.

    Controlled Purchase Led to Arrest

Police Executed Search Warrants on Vehicle and Residence

Investigators arranged what authorities described as a controlled purchase operation in an effort to verify the suspect’s identity and involvement in the alleged scheme.

According to police documents, Reyes-Garcia provided his home address to undercover officers posing as prospective buyers interested in purchasing the jewelry. That interaction enabled law enforcement officials to coordinate surveillance and plan an arrest operation.

Police later stopped Reyes-Garcia’s vehicle and took him into custody without incident. Following the arrest, officers executed search warrants at both his residence and vehicle.

During the searches, investigators reportedly recovered the stolen jewelry from the suspect’s home. Authorities also said they discovered a concealed firearm inside his vehicle, resulting in an additional misdemeanor concealed carry charge.

Multiple Charges Filed in Mecklenburg County

    Suspect Posted $10,000 Bond

Reyes-Garcia now faces several charges, including felony larceny, possession of stolen goods, and misdemeanor concealed carry.

Court records show he was booked into the Mecklenburg County jail before later posting a $10,000 bond, according to local media reports.

During questioning with investigators, Reyes-Garcia allegedly claimed he found the jewelry inside a secure baggage area rather than stealing it directly from a passenger’s luggage.

However, investigators noted in police documents that the suspect requested legal counsel when questioned about possible surveillance footage from restricted airport areas. Authorities have not publicly confirmed whether any video evidence directly captured the alleged theft.

    Airport Security Concerns Renewed

Insider Access Remains an Industry Challenge

The incident has renewed scrutiny over baggage handling security and the risks associated with insider access at major airports.

Airports across the United States rely heavily on contractors and third-party employees to manage baggage operations, maintenance, and other logistical functions in restricted areas. Aviation security experts have long warned that employee access to passenger luggage creates vulnerabilities that are difficult to eliminate entirely, even with surveillance systems and background checks in place.

Charlotte Douglas International Airport, a major connecting hub in the Southeast, processes millions of passengers and checked bags each year. While theft incidents involving airport personnel remain relatively uncommon, law enforcement agencies periodically investigate cases tied to baggage handling operations.

Officials have not indicated whether additional airport security measures will be implemented following the investigation.

The case remains under investigation, and no further court dates have yet been announced publicly.
