Sharp Decline in Middle East Routes Highlights Shifting Travel Patterns
LONDON — Passenger traffic between London Heathrow Airport and the Middle East dropped sharply in March, underscoring the growing impact of geopolitical instability on global aviation demand. The airport reported a 51% decline in Middle East-bound passenger volumes, even as other long-haul markets posted strong gains.
The steep fall comes against a backdrop of escalating tensions in the region, including airspace disruptions across the Persian Gulf and heightened security risks tied to Iranian missile and drone activity. While major carriers continued operating, traveler confidence weakened significantly, prompting a notable shift in global travel behavior.
Passenger Decline Driven by Regional Conflict
Heathrow Airport said passenger numbers on Middle East routes fell from around 600 million in March 2025 to 294 million in March 2026, reflecting a sharp contraction in demand during the ongoing crisis.
The decline followed the launch of a joint U.S. and Israeli offensive on Iran, which intensified concerns over the safety of regional airspace. As a result, many passengers opted to avoid traditional transit hubs in the Middle East, disrupting established long-haul routing patterns through Heathrow.
Despite airlines such as Emirates, Qatar Airways, and Etihad Airways maintaining multiple daily services to London, the drop in passenger volumes highlights the sensitivity of international travel demand to geopolitical developments. Heathrow, one of Europe’s primary gateways for Middle East connectivity, has been particularly exposed to these shifts.
Asia and Africa See Strong Growth as Demand Rebalances
While Middle East traffic weakened, Heathrow experienced robust growth in other regions, particularly across Asia and Africa.
Passenger traffic on non-stop Asia-Pacific routes rose 31% in March, driven by rerouted demand and evolving traveler preferences. Many passengers appear to be favoring direct services over connections through geopolitically sensitive regions.
Africa also posted notable gains, with passenger numbers increasing from 262 million in March 2025 to 323 million in March 2026, according to PYOK data cited by the airport.
Heathrow attributed this growth to broader network realignments and stronger point-to-point demand in emerging markets. These trends suggest airlines and passengers alike are adapting quickly to shifting global conditions.
Transit traffic through Heathrow also increased by 10% during the month, as travelers sought alternative hubs to avoid Middle Eastern connections. However, airport officials cautioned that this trend may be short-lived due to capacity constraints.
Capacity Limits and Uncertain Outlook Ahead
Looking ahead, Heathrow signaled that the outlook remains uncertain as geopolitical tensions persist. Airport officials said they are closely monitoring developments and their potential impact on passenger demand and airline scheduling.
Despite concerns surrounding the Strait of Hormuz, Heathrow confirmed that fuel supply has not been disrupted and overall operations remain stable for now.
However, the airport emphasized its limited ability to absorb additional transit demand. With runway capacity already fully utilized, Heathrow faces constraints in scaling up operations to accommodate shifting travel flows.
