Families Seek Greater Transparency in Ongoing Investigation Into Fatal Air India Crash
AHMEDABAD — Families of victims killed in the Air India Flight AI171 crash have formally called on Indian authorities to release black box data from the aircraft, intensifying pressure on investigators nearly 10 months after the fatal accident.
Around 15 families gathered on Sindhu Bhavan Road in Ahmedabad to demand access to the aircraft’s cockpit voice recorder (CVR) and flight data recorder (FDR), arguing that the information is critical to understanding what caused the crash and to helping relatives gain long-awaited emotional closure.
The group submitted a joint letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, with copies sent to the Ministry of Civil Aviation, the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau and the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), seeking greater transparency into the investigation.
Relatives said the black box data could provide crucial insight into the aircraft’s final moments and clarify whether technical malfunctions, operational errors or other factors contributed to the disaster.
Families Press for Answers as Final Report Remains Pending
The demand comes as authorities have yet to publish a final report on the crash, despite months of technical investigation into the incident involving operations linked to Ahmedabad.
Family members said that while they understand the complexity of aviation accident investigations, the prolonged lack of public information has deepened frustration and uncertainty among those affected.
Relatives have asked that if authorities are unable to publicly release the black box findings, the information should at minimum be shared directly with the victims’ families.

Thousands of items were reportedly retrieved during recovery operations, with relatives describing the identification and retrieval process as emotionally taxing and, in some cases, difficult to navigate.
Some families said they struggled to contact relevant officials for updates, alleging that phone calls frequently go unanswered and that communication has largely been limited to email correspondence.
They have requested the establishment of dedicated helplines and more accessible support channels to assist relatives managing recovery-related issues.
