    Engine Shutdown Mid-Flight Prompts Controlled Arrival Without Emergency Declaration

    TOKYO — A widebody aircraft operated by All Nippon Airways completed a controlled single-engine landing on April 1 after a mid-flight engine shutdown, underscoring both standard safety protocols and the resilience of modern long-haul aircraft systems.

    Flight NH65, operated by a Boeing 777-200ER, was en route from Tokyo Haneda Airport to New Chitose Airport when rising oil temperature in the left engine prompted pilots to shut it down as a precaution. The aircraft, registration JA745A, was carrying 327 people, including 317 passengers and 10 crew members.

    Despite the in-flight issue, the aircraft landed safely at 2:57 p.m. local time. The airline stated the arrival was classified as a normal landing, not an emergency, as the crew did not request priority handling from air traffic control.

    Crew Follows Standard Procedures During In-Flight Malfunction

    According to the airline, the flight departed Haneda at 1:05 p.m. and proceeded normally until nearing Sapporo, when cockpit indicators showed the left engine’s oil temperature exceeding acceptable limits.

    Following established safety procedures, the flight crew shut down the affected engine, notified air traffic control, and continued the approach using the remaining engine.

    Flight tracking data from Flightradar24 shows the aircraft conducted a brief holding pattern, circling counterclockwise for approximately seven minutes over Hidaka Town in Hokkaido at around 2:37 p.m., before initiating its final descent into New Chitose.

    After touchdown, the aircraft taxied to gate 8 under its own power, arriving at 3:24 p.m. following a ground inspection.

    Twin-engine aircraft like the Boeing 777 are designed and certified under ETOPS (Extended-range Twin-engine Operational Performance Standards), allowing them to safely operate for extended periods on a single engine. This makes controlled shutdowns such as the one executed on NH65 a well-rehearsed and manageable scenario for trained flight crews.

    Aircraft and Engine Details Under Review

    The aircraft involved, a domestically configured Boeing 777-200ER, features 392 seats across two classes, including 28 premium seats and 364 economy seats.

    It is powered by two Pratt & Whitney PW4074D engines, part of the PW4000 family, each capable of producing up to 90,000 pounds of thrust. These engines are widely used on long-haul aircraft and are equipped with advanced monitoring systems designed to detect anomalies such as temperature fluctuations.

    ANA confirmed that a full investigation into the cause of the oil temperature increase and subsequent engine shutdown is currently underway.

    Notably, the same aircraft had completed two earlier flights on April 1 — NH241 from Haneda to Fukuoka and NH246 on the return leg — before being assigned to NH65.

    Operational Impact Limited to Single Cancellation

    The incident resulted in limited operational disruption. The return service, flight NH68 from Sapporo to Haneda scheduled for 3:30 p.m., was canceled to allow for inspection and maintenance of the aircraft.

    ANA stated that affected passengers were rebooked on alternative flights and confirmed that no additional services beyond NH68 were impacted.

    Industry Context Highlights Reliability of Safety Protocols

    While engine shutdowns during flight can raise concerns among passengers, aviation experts note that such events are rare and typically handled without incident due to rigorous pilot training and aircraft certification standards.

    Modern twin-engine aircraft are specifically engineered to maintain safe flight and landing capabilities even after the loss of one engine. The smooth handling of NH65 aligns with industry expectations for such scenarios.

    ANA has not disclosed a timeline for completing its investigation but emphasized that safety remains its top priority.

    Further updates are expected as technical assessments of the aircraft and engine systems continue.
