Nonstop Hong Kong–Seattle Route Returns After Pandemic Hiatus
HONG KONG — Cathay Pacific has officially relaunched nonstop passenger service between Hong Kong and Seattle, restoring the only direct air link between the two cities and marking a significant step in the carrier’s North American expansion.
The route, which had been suspended since early 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, resumes nearly six years after its initial launch in 2019. The service now operates five times weekly—on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays—using the Airbus A350-900.
With Seattle added back into the network, Cathay Pacific now serves nine North American destinations and plans to operate more than 110 return flights per week across the region during the summer 2026 schedule.
Strategic Importance and Executive Commentary
The relaunch underscores growing economic and cultural ties between Asia and the U.S. Pacific Northwest, particularly in sectors such as technology, trade, and innovation.
Cathay Pacific Chief Customer and Commercial Officer Lavinia Lau emphasized the broader significance of the route, stating that the Seattle launch reflects strengthening connections between two global hubs. She noted that Seattle’s entrepreneurial culture aligns closely with Hong Kong’s dynamic business environment.
Lau also highlighted the Cathay Group’s ongoing investment of more than HK$100 billion into fleet modernization, cabin upgrades, lounge enhancements, and digital innovation, aimed at improving the overall passenger experience.
From the U.S. side, Sam Cho, Commissioner at the Port of Seattle, welcomed the return of the airline, noting that the service reconnects the region with a major Asian gateway while strengthening business and tourism links.
Aircraft, Cabin Offering, and Passenger Experience
The Seattle route is operated using Cathay Pacific’s Airbus A350-900, configured in a three-class layout designed for long-haul travel. The aircraft features 38 lie-flat business class suites, 28 premium economy seats, and 214 economy seats.
Business class passengers benefit from fully flat beds, while premium economy offers enhanced comfort with additional legroom and recline. Economy class, which has been recognized as the world’s best for long-haul travel, includes curated inflight dining developed in collaboration with Michelin-starred Hong Kong restaurants.
Cathay Pacific’s inflight entertainment system has also received top global rankings from Skytrax, further enhancing the onboard experience.
Passengers traveling via Hong Kong gain access to Cathay’s extensive global network, which spans more than 100 destinations across Asia, including Southeast Asia, Mainland China, and India.
Cargo Capabilities and Network Expansion
Beyond passenger travel, the Seattle route also strengthens Cathay Pacific’s cargo operations. The belly cargo capacity of the A350-900 complements nearly 40 weekly return freighter flights operated by Cathay Cargo to North America during peak summer months.
The aircraft’s temperature-controlled cargo holds are particularly suited for high-value and sensitive shipments, including semiconductors—a key export category linking Asia and the Pacific Northwest’s technology sector.
Cathay Pacific’s broader North American network now includes Boston, Chicago, Dallas-Fort Worth, Los Angeles, New York, San Francisco, Seattle, Toronto, and Vancouver.
Anniversary Milestone and Alliance Partnerships
The inaugural Hong Kong–Seattle relaunch flight also formed part of Cathay Pacific’s 80th anniversary celebrations. The aircraft featured a special “lettuce leaf sandwich” livery commemorating the airline’s founding in 1946.
As a member of the Oneworld alliance, Cathay Pacific collaborates with partners such as American Airlines and Alaska Airlines, enabling travelers to earn and redeem loyalty points through programs including AAdvantage and Asia Miles.
Seattle as a Strategic Destination
Seattle’s appeal as a destination continues to grow, driven by its blend of technology, culture, and natural beauty. The city serves as a major hub for innovation and offers convenient access to key attractions such as Pike Place Market, the Space Needle, and Mount Rainier National Park.
With improved connectivity through this nonstop service, travelers from Asia gain easier access to the Pacific Northwest, while U.S.-based passengers benefit from seamless onward connections through Hong Kong to major Asian markets.
The relaunch of the Seattle route signals Cathay Pacific’s continued recovery and expansion following the pandemic, reinforcing its position as a leading global carrier linking North America and Asia.
