SHANGHAI — American Express is preparing to open its first branded airport lounge in mainland China, marking a notable expansion of its premium travel footprint in Asia. The new lounge, set to debut in late April 2026, will be located at Shanghai Hongqiao International Airport (SHA), a hub known for domestic and regional business travel.

The launch represents a strategic move by Amex to tap into China’s growing base of high-frequency corporate travelers, while further extending its Global Lounge Collection, which now includes more than 1,550 lounges worldwide.

Strategic Location Signals Focus on Domestic Business Travel

Unlike many international lounge expansions, Amex has opted to establish its presence at Hongqiao Airport rather than Shanghai Pudong International Airport (PVG), the city’s primary international gateway. Hongqiao’s proximity to central Shanghai and its emphasis on short-haul and regional routes make it a preferred choice for business travelers.

This decision underscores a deliberate strategy: targeting premium domestic and regional passengers rather than long-haul international flyers. Industry observers note that China’s domestic business travel segment has been expanding rapidly, presenting an opportunity for premium service providers.

Lounge Design and Amenities Reflect Local Culture

The new American Express Lounge will be situated in the pre-security area on the 21M floor of Terminal 2. While not branded as a Centurion Lounge, it will be part of the broader Global Lounge Collection.

Spanning approximately 1,572 square feet, the lounge is designed to accommodate a variety of traveler needs. Seating options will range from individual workspaces to areas suited for small groups and dining.

Amex said the space will incorporate design elements inspired by Shanghai’s architectural heritage, along with curated food and beverage offerings that reflect the region’s culinary identity. A terrace overlooking the runway will allow guests to watch arriving and departing aircraft, adding a distinctive feature uncommon in many airport lounges.

Anna Marrs, Group President of Global Merchant and Network Services at American Express, described the lounge as designed for local, regional, and international business and leisure travelers, offering premium amenities and a space to relax before a flight.

Access Limited Initially to Select Cardholders

Access to the lounge will be available to eligible American Express cardmembers, with guest privileges varying by card type. Complimentary entry will be extended to holders of:

    • American Express Platinum Card
    • The Business Platinum Card from American Express
    • The Centurion Card from American Express (personal and business versions)

In its initial phase, access may be restricted primarily to China-issued Centurion cardholders. American Express indicated that Platinum cardholders and international customers are expected to be included in later phases.

Broader Implications for Amex’s Asia Strategy

The Hongqiao lounge opening highlights Amex’s evolving strategy in China and the wider Asia-Pacific region. By focusing on a domestic travel hub, the company appears to be prioritizing frequent corporate travelers—an underserved yet rapidly growing segment in the premium travel market.

Analysts suggest the move could signal further lounge development across other major Chinese cities, though the company has not confirmed additional locations. Still, the expansion positions American Express as a more competitive player in the region’s premium travel ecosystem.

Whether this initial investment leads to a broader network of lounges in mainland China remains to be seen. However, the Hongqiao launch marks a clear step in strengthening Amex’s presence in one of the world’s largest and most dynamic travel markets.
