A long-haul international flight operated by Air India was diverted on Monday after a suspected technical issue was detected mid-air, prompting a precautionary landing in Saudi Arabia.

Flight AI133, scheduled to operate from Bengaluru’s Kempegowda International Airport to London Heathrow Airport, was rerouted to King Abdulaziz International Airport in Jeddah on March 23, 2026. The aircraft involved was a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner.

The airline stated that the diversion was carried out as a precautionary measure in line with established safety protocols.

The aircraft landed safely in Jeddah at 1958 hrs IST, with no injuries reported among passengers or crew.

    Aircraft Grounded for Inspection

Air India confirmed that the aircraft, registered as VT-ANI, has been grounded in Jeddah for a detailed technical inspection following the diversion. The plane is approximately 13 years old and is powered by two GEnX engines.

The airline said such inspections are standard whenever a potential issue is detected during flight operations, even if no immediate hazard is confirmed. Engineering teams are currently assessing the aircraft before it can be cleared for further service.

Air India emphasized that the decision to divert was taken out of an abundance of caution to ensure operational safety.

    Passenger Support and Travel Arrangements

Following the unscheduled landing, Air India is coordinating with airport authorities in Jeddah and local agencies to assist affected passengers. The airline is providing necessary support, including help with onward travel arrangements.

Efforts are underway to minimize disruption and ensure passengers can continue their journeys to London as soon as possible, subject to safety clearances and logistical coordination.

Recent Similar Incident Highlights Safety Protocols

The diversion comes just days after another Air India flight experienced a mid-air alert that led to a precautionary landing in Saudi Arabia.

Flight AI116, operating from John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York to Mumbai, was diverted to Prince Mohammad bin Abdulaziz International Airport in Medina after a cockpit warning indicated a possible fire in the aft cargo hold.

The flight, operated by a Boeing 777-300ER, landed safely, and all passengers and crew remained unharmed.

    Mid-Air Warning Triggers Precautionary Diversion

The cockpit alert prompted immediate action from the flight crew, who followed established aviation safety protocols requiring diversion in the event of a fire warning. After evaluating the situation, pilots chose to land in Medina as a precaution.

Subsequent technical inspections revealed that the fire warning was false, with no evidence of fire or related hazards found on the aircraft.

Despite the false alarm, such systems are designed to prioritize safety, ensuring that even suspected risks are addressed without delay.

    Safe Continuation After Inspection

After remaining on the ground in Medina for over four hours and thirty minutes, the aircraft—registered VT-AER and powered by GE90 engines—was cleared for departure. The flight later continued to Mumbai and completed its journey without further incident.

Air India confirmed that all passengers were provided assistance during the delay, including accommodation and travel support, as the airline worked with local authorities to manage the situation.

The recent incidents highlight the aviation industry’s strict adherence to safety procedures, where even potential technical concerns trigger immediate precautionary responses to safeguard passengers and crew.
