MELBOURNE — Qantas Airways is moving forward with its ambitious ultra-long-haul initiative, Project Sunrise, while reaffirming that traditional hub-based operations will remain central to its international network strategy. The airline’s leadership says the future of long-haul travel lies in a hybrid approach that combines non-stop flights with established transit routes.
Speaking in Melbourne, Qantas International CEO Cam Wallace made clear that the airline’s expansion into ultra-long-haul flying will not replace its reliance on key global hubs. Instead, the strategy is designed to enhance connectivity while meeting evolving passenger preferences.
Project Sunrise to Redefine Ultra-Long-Haul Travel
At the center of Qantas’ long-term vision is Project Sunrise, a flagship program aimed at enabling direct flights from Australia’s east coast to major global cities such as New York and London. These routes, expected to exceed 20 hours in duration, represent a significant leap in long-haul aviation capabilities.
The first Airbus A350-1000ULR aircraft designated for these services is currently undergoing ground testing in Toulouse, while a second aircraft is already in final assembly. Qantas expects the aircraft to enter commercial service by 2027.
Wallace noted that these next-generation aircraft will allow the airline to redefine long-distance travel. He explained that the aircraft will turn Australia’s geographic remoteness into a competitive advantage rather than a limitation.
Hub Operations Remain Critical
Despite growing excitement around non-stop flights, Qantas has emphasized that hub-based operations will continue to play a vital role in its network. Routes via transit points such as Singapore will remain essential for maintaining flexibility and connectivity.
Wallace stated that hubs will not disappear, as they play a complementary role in the airline’s broader strategy. They allow Qantas to serve multiple destinations efficiently while maintaining frequency and capacity across key markets.
The airline believes that maintaining a balance between direct and connecting services will provide the best overall network performance, particularly as demand varies across regions and seasons.
Hybrid Model to Drive Network Flexibility
Qantas’ hybrid approach reflects a broader shift in the aviation industry, where airlines are increasingly blending point-to-point routes with hub-and-spoke systems. This model enables carriers to respond more effectively to changing passenger demand while optimizing operational efficiency.
For Qantas, the strategy ensures that ultra-long-haul routes can coexist with high-frequency services through established hubs. This allows the airline to cater to both premium travelers seeking convenience and cost-conscious passengers who prioritize flexibility.
Fleet Renewal Underpins Strategy
According to Australian Aviation, Qantas is in the midst of one of the largest fleet renewal programs in its history, involving more than 200 aircraft. The transition will gradually shift the airline from a predominantly Boeing fleet to a more Airbus-focused operation.
The introduction of Boeing 787 Dreamliners and Airbus A350 aircraft is expected to enhance operational flexibility and fuel efficiency. These aircraft enable Qantas to operate longer routes more economically while also supporting expanded point-to-point services.
Wallace highlighted that passengers increasingly prefer direct flights, especially on routes exceeding 15 hours. He added that such services consistently rank among the airline’s top-performing routes in terms of customer satisfaction.
Gradual Rollout Ahead of 2027 Launch
Before launching ultra-long-haul services, Qantas may use its A350-1000ULR aircraft on shorter routes, including flights to New Zealand, for crew training and operational preparation. However, the airline has not yet confirmed whether London or New York will be the first destination to receive Project Sunrise services.
As Qantas advances toward its 2027 target, the airline is positioning itself to reshape long-haul travel while maintaining the operational resilience provided by its global hub network.
