Delta Air Lines is implementing a significant leadership reshuffle as longtime executive John Laughter prepares to retire after more than three decades with the airline. The move, announced from the company’s Atlanta headquarters, is designed to strengthen Delta’s leadership pipeline and position the airline for its next phase of strategic growth.
The changes affect several top leadership roles across operations, finance, marketing, and strategy. According to the company, the restructuring will help align key divisions and ensure continuity as senior executives take on expanded responsibilities.
Strategic Leadership Changes at the Top
Delta Chief Executive Officer Ed Bastian outlined the leadership changes in an internal memo to employees, emphasizing that the restructuring is part of the airline’s long-term strategy to maintain operational strength and leadership depth.
Among the most significant changes is the promotion of Peter Carter to President of Delta Air Lines. Carter, who previously oversaw global policy and legal affairs, will now broaden his responsibilities to include enterprise strategy, international operations, real estate, sustainability initiatives, and diversity programs.
Carter has spent more than a decade with Delta and has played a central role in shaping major corporate initiatives. His expanded role reflects Delta’s focus on integrating strategy and operational planning as the airline continues to grow its global footprint.
Bastian indicated that Carter’s experience in long-term planning and corporate strategy positions him well to help guide Delta through its next stage of development.
John Laughter’s Three-Decade Career Comes to a Close
A central element of the leadership transition is the retirement of John Laughter, who currently serves as Executive Vice President, Chief of Operations, and President of Delta TechOps. Laughter will officially retire on April 30, concluding a career that spans more than 30 years at the airline.
Laughter began his career at Delta as an aircraft liaison engineer within the company’s Technical Operations division. Over time, he rose through the ranks to become one of the airline’s most influential operational leaders.
During his tenure, Laughter helped guide Delta through multiple industry challenges, including periods of economic uncertainty and operational transformation. Under his leadership, the airline strengthened its reputation for reliability and safety while expanding the capabilities of its TechOps division, which is widely recognized as one of the most respected aircraft maintenance operations in the aviation industry.
Bastian credited Laughter with embodying Delta’s people-first culture and playing a key role in supporting employees, customers, and communities throughout his career.
Dan Janki to Become Chief Operating Officer
Following Laughter’s retirement, Dan Janki will assume the role of Chief Operating Officer. Janki previously served as Delta’s Chief Financial Officer and has been closely involved in both financial planning and operational strategy at the company.
As COO, Janki will oversee the airline’s entire operational structure. His responsibilities will include Airport Customer Service, Flight Operations, In-Flight Service, the Operations and Customer Center, Reservation Sales and Customer Care, Technical Operations, and Delta’s Corporate Safety, Security, and Compliance teams.
Delta leadership believes bringing these operational units under Janki’s oversight will enhance coordination across departments and help maintain the airline’s strong operational performance.
Expanded Role for Alain Bellemare at TechOps
Another key change involves Alain Bellemare, Executive Vice President and President International. In addition to his current responsibilities overseeing Delta’s global partnerships and international operations, Bellemare will also serve as Chairman of Delta TechOps.
Bellemare brings extensive experience from the aerospace and aviation sectors, as well as a strong network of international industry relationships. In his new role, he will help strengthen the strategic direction of the TechOps division and maintain its reputation for engineering expertise and technical reliability.
Erik Snell Appointed Chief Financial Officer
As part of the reshuffle, Erik Snell will step into the role of Chief Financial Officer. Snell has been with Delta for roughly two decades and has held several senior leadership roles across the company.
Most recently, he served as Chief Customer Experience Officer, overseeing initiatives aimed at improving the passenger journey and strengthening Delta’s brand reputation. As CFO, Snell will now lead the airline’s financial organization and oversee areas including fleet planning, supply chain management, and Monroe Energy, Delta’s refinery subsidiary.
Delta executives highlighted Snell’s combination of financial expertise and operational insight as a key strength in the role.
Marketing Leadership Transition
The leadership changes also include a transition within Delta’s marketing organization. Chief Marketing Officer Alicia Tillman will depart the company to pursue broader leadership opportunities outside the airline.
Following her departure, Ranjan Goswami will take on the combined role of Chief Marketing and Product Officer. Goswami has led several high-profile brand and customer experience initiatives at Delta and has been instrumental in developing partnerships and strengthening the airline’s global brand.
Under the new leadership structure, Peter Carter, Dan Janki, Erik Snell, and Ranjan Goswami will report directly to CEO Ed Bastian.
