Historic First for Australia–Las Vegas Travel
Qantas plans to make aviation history by becoming the first airline to offer nonstop flights between Australia and Las Vegas, a move that reflects strong demand for direct long-haul travel and strengthens tourism and business ties between the two countries.
The new seasonal service will connect Sydney Airport and Harry Reid International Airport three times per week between Dec. 29, 2026, and March 12, 2027. By eliminating stopovers at traditional U.S. gateways such as Los Angeles or San Francisco, the route will reduce travel time by up to five hours.
The launch also represents a milestone for Qantas’ long-haul network expansion, positioning the airline to capture peak travel demand tied to major international events and tourism flows.
Flight Schedule, Aircraft and Pricing
The flights will operate under flight number QF55 on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays using the Boeing 787 Dreamliner, an aircraft widely used for ultra-long-haul routes due to its fuel efficiency and passenger comfort features.
Departures from Sydney are scheduled for 9:00 p.m., arriving in Las Vegas at 3:55 p.m. local time after a flight of approximately 13 hours and 55 minutes.
Qantas said economy return fares will start from AUD$1,099, offering what it described as competitive pricing for a nonstop transpacific route.
The addition of Las Vegas brings Qantas’ global network to 101 destinations. It also becomes the airline’s eighth destination in North and South America, joining Los Angeles, San Francisco, Honolulu, Dallas, New York, Vancouver and Santiago.
Strategy Targets Peak Leisure and Event Demand
Qantas executives say the Las Vegas route fits into a broader seasonal strategy designed to match capacity with periods of heightened travel interest.
Qantas International CEO Cam Wallace said sustained demand for overseas travel is driving the airline’s seasonal expansion strategy.
He noted that previous seasonal services to Rome and Sapporo demonstrated that travelers respond strongly to direct flights timed around peak interest periods.
Wallace also emphasized that the airline’s ongoing fleet renewal program provides greater flexibility to open new long-haul routes. The addition of Las Vegas reflects Qantas’ ability to deploy aircraft strategically where market demand supports sustainable operations.
Las Vegas hosts several global events that attract international visitors, including the Consumer Electronics Show, one of the world’s largest technology exhibitions. The city has also become a growing destination for Australian sports fans, particularly through the National Rugby League’s season-opening festival.
For the past two years, Qantas has operated charter flights in partnership with the National Rugby League to transport fans from Australia’s East Coast to Las Vegas. Those flights have consistently recorded strong demand, with the 2026 services fully booked for the third consecutive year.
Tourism and Economic Impact
Tourism officials see the new route as an opportunity to boost visitor flows in both directions.
Las Vegas attracts more than 250,000 Australian visitors annually, making Australia its second-largest international source market. The nonstop flights are expected to increase those numbers by making travel more convenient and reducing total journey time.
Australia’s Minister for Trade and Tourism, Don Farrell, welcomed the route, highlighting that 745,000 Americans visited Australia last year. He stated that direct connectivity will further strengthen tourism and trade ties between the two countries.
The service is also expected to benefit Australia’s hospitality, aviation and tourism sectors, which continue to recover and grow following pandemic-era disruptions.
Loyalty Incentives and Market Positioning
To stimulate early bookings, Qantas is offering frequent flyer incentives tied to the new route. Qantas Frequent Flyers can earn double Qantas Points, equal to six points per dollar spent, on Qantas Hotels and Holiday packages to Las Vegas for bookings made before March 2, 2026.
Such promotions are designed to build momentum ahead of the inaugural season and encourage travelers to bundle flights with hotel and vacation packages.
The Las Vegas launch highlights Qantas’ broader strategy of leveraging its Dreamliner fleet to open new nonstop routes that bypass traditional hubs, offering travelers greater convenience while improving the airline’s operational efficiency.
For Qantas, the route represents both a symbolic and commercial milestone, linking Australia directly with one of the world’s most recognizable entertainment and convention destinations while reinforcing its position as a leader in long-haul international aviation.
