BEIJING — China’s state-backed aircraft manufacturer Commercial Aircraft Corporation of China is investing nearly $92 million into its subsidiary carrier, Chengdu Airlines, in a move designed to accelerate international adoption of its C909 regional jet and strengthen its competitive position in global aviation markets.

The funding package, totaling 634 million yuan ($91.76 million), will increase Chengdu Airlines’ registered capital from 680 million yuan to 2 billion yuan, significantly reinforcing Comac’s 48% controlling stake. The airline, based in Chengdu, is expected to use the additional capital to expand its C909 fleet and deploy more aircraft on international routes across Southeast Asia, Central Asia, and Russia.

The investment underscores Comac’s strategy of using its in-house airline as a proving ground to showcase the jet’s operational performance to prospective overseas customers, analysts say.

Using an Airline to Showcase a Homegrown Jet

Industry observers view the capital infusion as a calculated effort to position Chengdu Airlines as a demonstration platform for the C909, giving Comac greater control over how and where the aircraft is deployed.

By operating the aircraft on international routes through a controlled subsidiary, Comac can generate performance data, validate operating economics, and build confidence among foreign airlines evaluating alternatives to Western-built regional jets.

The move also aligns with China’s broader ambition to develop a domestically produced commercial aviation sector capable of competing with established manufacturers such as Airbus and Boeing. While Comac’s larger C919 narrowbody jet is currently focused on domestic Chinese carriers, the smaller C909 is emerging as the company’s primary export product.

Originally developed as the ARJ21, the C909 can carry up to 97 passengers and fly routes of up to 3,700 kilometers (about 2,300 miles), making it well suited for short- and medium-haul regional routes common throughout Asia.

    Expanding International Routes and Customers

Chengdu Airlines has already begun deploying the aircraft beyond China’s borders. Its international routes include Vladivostok and Khabarovsk in Russia, as well as Osh in Kyrgyzstan. In June 2024, the airline launched the jet’s first Central Asia route connecting Kashgar, China, with Khujand, Tajikistan.

Comac has also expanded internationally through leasing and sales agreements. In April 2025, two C909 aircraft were leased to Vietnam’s VietJet Air, making Vietnam the third overseas market to operate the aircraft.

Indonesia’s TransNusa became the first foreign customer in April 2023, followed by Lao Airlines in 2025. Meanwhile, Air Cambodia has signed a memorandum of understanding to purchase 10 C909 jets, with options for an additional 10.

At the Singapore Airshow, Comac reported that nine C909 aircraft are currently operating across Southeast Asia on more than 20 routes. Together, those planes have carried more than 700,000 passengers, an early sign of growing acceptance in the region.

The aircraft’s relatively low acquisition and operating costs could make it particularly attractive to airlines in emerging markets or those seeking efficient options for thinner regional routes, analysts say.

State Support Strengthens Comac’s Global Ambitions

Comac’s push into overseas markets comes alongside substantial financial backing from the Chinese government. The manufacturer recently received a separate 44 billion yuan capital injection from a group led by the State-owned Assets Supervision and Administration Commission, increasing the state entity’s ownership stake to just over 53%, according to media reports.

The additional funding provides Comac with the financial resources needed to scale production, improve support infrastructure, and compete more aggressively in global markets.

For China, the success of the C909 represents more than just aircraft sales. It is part of a broader strategic effort to establish the country as a major player in commercial aerospace, reduce reliance on foreign manufacturers, and build a self-sufficient aviation industry.

With fresh capital, expanding international routes, and growing overseas interest, the C909 is quickly becoming a centerpiece of that effort — and Chengdu Airlines is playing a central role in bringing China’s first modern regional jet to the global stage.
