SAVANNAH, Ga. — A Delta Air Lines Boeing 737-900 was forced to make an emergency return to Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport on Feb. 22 after an engine failure during takeoff sparked a grass fire and prompted an urgent response from airport fire crews.
The aircraft, operating as Flight DL1067 bound for Atlanta, had departed around 6:45 p.m. but climbed to less than 3,000 feet before pilots aborted the climb and turned back. Flames were seen coming from one of the jet’s engines, while dry and windy conditions fueled a fast-moving grass fire near the runway.
Despite the dramatic sequence, the aircraft landed safely within minutes. No injuries were reported among passengers or crew, according to Delta and airport officials.
Passenger videos capture dramatic moments
Passengers described a frightening experience as the aircraft accelerated for departure. According to passenger accounts, one of the aircraft’s CFM56 turbofan engines emitted a loud blast during takeoff, followed by visible flames. The aircraft had just begun its initial climb when the malfunction occurred.
Videos taken by passengers showed flames spreading through dry grass adjacent to the runway as the jet circled back to land.
Flight-tracking data indicated the pilots quickly stabilized the aircraft, executed a controlled turn, and aligned with the runway for landing. Throughout the incident, the flight crew maintained calm communication and followed established emergency procedures, according to passengers onboard.
The aircraft touched down safely shortly after departure and taxied back to the gate under its own power.
Emergency crews contain fire, passengers deplane safely
Airport fire and rescue teams were already positioned along the runway as a precaution when the plane landed. Firefighters worked quickly to contain the grass fire, which had spread due to gusty winds and dry ground conditions.
Delta confirmed that the aircraft experienced a mechanical issue involving its left engine. Passengers exited normally once the plane reached the gate, and maintenance crews began immediate inspections.
The airline said it was working to reaccommodate affected travelers on alternative flights and emphasized its ongoing safety protocols.
The incident did not cause injuries or significant additional disruptions at the Savannah airport beyond the immediate emergency response.

The Savannah emergency occurred during a day of broader operational strain across Delta’s network.
Severe winter weather in the northeastern United States disrupted numerous flights, while intermittent IT connectivity issues temporarily affected check-in systems at certain airport gates and departure areas. In some cases, gate agents were forced to process passengers manually while systems were restored.
By the end of Sunday, flight tracking data showed 651 delayed Delta flights, representing about 19 percent of its scheduled operations. Approximately 45 flights were canceled systemwide.
The airline confirmed that the Savannah engine failure did not escalate into a larger operational crisis beyond the affected aircraft and passengers.
