Lufthansa City Airlines has officially opened a new operating base at Frankfurt Airport, marking a significant step in the Lufthansa Group’s strategy to expand and modernize its short-haul European network. The launch positions Frankfurt as a central pillar in the airline’s next phase of growth, reinforcing the group’s hub-and-spoke model while adding capacity on high-demand intra-European routes.
The new base began operations on February 9, 2026, at Frankfurt Airport, the Lufthansa Group’s largest hub. It follows the airline’s initial launch in Munich in summer 2024 and reflects a broader effort to build scalable, cost-efficient short-haul operations that can support long-haul connectivity across the group’s global network.
Frankfurt Base Launch
Lufthansa City Airlines commenced Frankfurt operations with its first scheduled flight to Manchester on February 9, operated by an Airbus A320neo. The inaugural service underscored the airline’s focus on deploying modern, fuel-efficient aircraft on dense European city pairs.
Initial destinations from Frankfurt include Manchester, Berlin, and Valencia, with Berlin and Valencia joining the schedule later in February. Düsseldorf and Málaga are set to follow in March as a second aircraft is introduced at the Frankfurt base. The airline has also confirmed that additional destinations will be rolled out from summer 2026 as capacity builds.
Planned future routes include London Heathrow, Stockholm, Bilbao, Hamburg, Helsinki, Ibiza, Marseille, and Bucharest. These destinations span a mix of major business centers and popular leisure markets, reflecting Lufthansa City Airlines’ role in balancing corporate travel demand with seasonal tourism flows.
Role Within the Lufthansa Group Network
The Frankfurt expansion strengthens Lufthansa City Airlines’ position within the Lufthansa Group as a key provider of short-haul feeder traffic. The airline is designed to complement the group’s mainline and regional carriers by delivering reliable, high-frequency services that connect European cities with long-haul departures from major hubs.
Rather than pursuing rapid capacity expansion, the Frankfurt base is intended to support steady, disciplined growth. This approach allows the airline to adjust capacity in line with demand while maintaining operational stability, a priority for the group as it continues to rebuild and optimize post-pandemic networks.
Operating from both Frankfurt and Munich provides additional flexibility. The dual-base model is expected to improve schedule resilience, reduce disruption risk, and enhance connectivity for passengers traveling across the Lufthansa Group’s European and intercontinental networks.
Fleet Strategy and Sustainability Focus
The Airbus A320neo forms the backbone of Lufthansa City Airlines’ fleet strategy. The aircraft offers improved fuel efficiency and lower emissions compared with previous-generation narrowbodies, aligning with the group’s broader sustainability goals. Its range and capacity also give the airline flexibility to serve a wide range of short- and medium-haul routes efficiently.
By September 2026, the Frankfurt-based fleet is expected to grow to seven Airbus A320neo aircraft. This will complement the 13 aircraft currently operating from Munich, bringing the airline’s total fleet to 20 aircraft and underscoring a controlled but consistent expansion trajectory.
Operational Performance and Staffing Growth
Lufthansa City Airlines’ growth is supported by strong operational performance. In 2025, the airline operated nearly 16,000 flights and carried approximately 2 million passengers to 27 destinations, highlighting its rapid integration into the group’s short-haul operations.
Staffing remains a key focus as the Frankfurt base ramps up. Around 60 employees have already been hired locally, and the airline plans to recruit an additional 80 cockpit crew members and 200 cabin crew in the coming months. The total workforce currently stands at about 450 employees, a figure expected to rise as new aircraft and routes are added.
Alliance Integration and Long-Term Outlook
Since September 2025, Lufthansa City Airlines has been a permanent member of the Star Alliance, giving passengers access to a broader global network and frequent-flyer benefits. Alliance membership further integrates the carrier into the Lufthansa Group’s commercial ecosystem and enhances its appeal to both business and leisure travelers.
The opening of the Frankfurt base reinforces Lufthansa City Airlines’ strategic importance within the group and signals a long-term commitment to strengthening European short-haul connectivity. As the airline continues to expand its fleet and network, Frankfurt is set to play a central role in supporting the Lufthansa Group’s operational efficiency, sustainability objectives, and competitive positioning in the European aviation market.
