Air Transat has officially entered the Canada–Brazil nonstop market with the launch of new direct services from Toronto and Montreal to Rio de Janeiro, expanding its South American footprint and strengthening long-haul leisure connectivity from Canada. The new routes, which began operating in early February, mark the airline’s first-ever nonstop flights to Brazil and position it uniquely in the Canadian aviation landscape.

The inaugural flight from Toronto Pearson International Airport departed on February 4, followed by the first service from Montréal-Trudeau International Airport on February 5. Both routes connect directly to Rio de Janeiro–Galeão International Airport, one of Brazil’s primary international gateways.

With the launch, Air Transat becomes the only carrier offering a nonstop link between Montreal and Rio de Janeiro, while also reinforcing nonstop service options from Toronto, Canada’s largest air travel market.

    Strategic Expansion into Brazil

The addition of Rio de Janeiro reflects Air Transat’s broader strategy to expand selectively into high-demand leisure and visiting-friends-and-relatives markets. Brazil is one of South America’s most dynamic aviation markets, driven by tourism, cultural ties, and a large diaspora population across major Canadian cities.

By offering direct access, Air Transat eliminates the need for travelers to connect through U.S. or European hubs, reducing travel time and complexity. The airline’s move also strengthens Canada’s limited nonstop air links to South America, a region that has historically had fewer direct options compared with transatlantic and transpacific markets.

    Route Schedule and Operations

Air Transat will operate the Toronto–Rio de Janeiro route twice weekly, with departures scheduled on Wednesdays and Saturdays. This service is planned to operate through June 10, 2026, covering peak winter travel periods as well as shoulder seasons.

The Montreal–Rio de Janeiro service will operate once weekly on Thursdays and will run through June 4, 2026. As the only nonstop option between the two cities, the route fills a long-standing connectivity gap for travelers in Quebec seeking direct access to Brazil.

Both routes are operated using Airbus A330 widebody aircraft. The A330 offers increased seat capacity and long-haul comfort, making it well suited for transcontinental leisure travel while providing operational efficiency for the airline.

    Market Demand Supports New Services

Travel demand between Canada and Rio de Janeiro has shown steady growth in recent years. According to Canada Aviation News, approximately 44,000 passengers travel annually between the two markets.

Nearly half of this demand originates from the Greater Toronto Area, underscoring the commercial rationale for a nonstop Toronto service. Montreal, meanwhile, represents an underserved market, where travelers previously relied on connecting itineraries to reach Brazil.

Industry observers expect the new routes to stimulate additional demand by making travel more convenient, particularly for leisure travelers and those visiting friends and relatives. The services are also anticipated to support cultural exchange and tourism flows between Canada and Brazil.

Airport authorities in both Toronto and Montreal have identified the new flights as strategic additions to their long-haul networks, strengthening their positions as international gateways.

    Enhanced Connectivity Beyond Rio

Air Transat’s entry into Rio de Janeiro also expands travel options beyond the city itself through its interline partnership with GOL Airlines. From Galeão Airport, passengers can connect to a wide range of domestic and regional destinations across Brazil and South America.

Key onward destinations include São Paulo, Porto Alegre, Recife, Salvador, and Belo Horizonte. This connectivity significantly extends the practical reach of the new routes, making them attractive not only to leisure travelers but also to those visiting secondary cities.

    Strengthening Air Transat’s Long-Haul Strategy

The Rio de Janeiro launch highlights Air Transat’s approach to long-haul growth, combining exclusive routes, widebody aircraft, and strategic partnerships. By targeting underserved city pairs and leveraging interline connectivity, the airline continues to differentiate itself in the competitive leisure travel sector.

As the services operate through mid-2026, industry stakeholders will closely watch performance and demand trends. If successful, the routes could pave the way for further expansion into South America and reinforce Air Transat’s role as a key connector between Canada and high-demand international leisure destinations.
