ABU DHABI — Air China has begun a new nonstop route between Beijing Capital International Airport (PEK) and Abu Dhabi Zayed International Airport (AUH), adding direct capacity between the political capitals of China and the United Arab Emirates and strengthening its presence in the Middle East.

The inaugural flight arrived in Abu Dhabi on Jan. 24, 2026, carrying 278 passengers and establishing the first direct Beijing–Abu Dhabi link operated by a Chinese airline. The launch marks Air China’s first new international route introduction of 2026 and comes as airlines continue to rebuild long-haul networks following years of reduced overseas operations.

Air China operated the first service as flight CA705 using a Boeing 787 Dreamliner. The aircraft departed Beijing and landed in Abu Dhabi, creating a new nonstop option for travelers who previously relied on connecting itineraries through Gulf hubs or Asian transit points.

First Chinese carrier to operate the route in this direction

While Etihad Airways (EY) has long provided connectivity between Abu Dhabi and Beijing, Air China’s entry represents a shift in competitive dynamics for the corridor by bringing a Chinese operator into the market on a nonstop basis.

Industry observers view the new service as a notable addition to direct air links between China and the UAE, particularly as both countries maintain active economic and diplomatic engagement and continue to position their capitals as gateways for commerce, tourism, and government-related travel.

The route “creates a direct air bridge between the political capitals of China and the United Arab Emirates,” Air China said in the announcement of the new service.

    Flight schedule and aircraft deployment

Air China will operate the Beijing–Abu Dhabi route four times per week on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays. Flights will operate as CA705 from Beijing to Abu Dhabi and CA706 on the return.

The carrier is deploying a Boeing 787 widebody aircraft on the service. Depending on configuration, the Dreamliner typically seats between 250 and 300 passengers and is widely used on long-haul routes where airlines aim to balance capacity with operating efficiency.

The 787’s range and fuel economy have made it a common choice for airlines opening new intercontinental routes where demand is developing and where operators want flexibility to adjust frequencies and capacity over time.

A strategic expansion amid international network rebuilding

For Air China, the launch adds another destination to its growing Middle East footprint and reflects a broader strategy to rebuild and selectively expand its international long-haul network. The airline, like many global carriers, has been recalibrating overseas operations after a period of reduced international flying.

The new Abu Dhabi service aligns with Air China’s approach of prioritizing routes that link major political and economic centers, offering direct access for business travelers, government delegations, and leisure passengers.

The addition also supports increasing movement between China and the UAE, where trade, investment, and tourism flows have expanded in recent years. Direct air connectivity is often viewed as a key enabler of commercial activity, reducing travel time and improving schedule convenience for corporate travelers and high-value cargo.

Market outlook tied to broader China-UAE ties

The route launch comes as aviation and economic ties between China and the UAE continue to deepen, with both countries positioning themselves as hubs for regional and international business.

Industry observers note that nonstop links like Beijing–Abu Dhabi may support longer-term traffic growth connected to Belt and Road Initiative cooperation, though Air China has not provided specific demand forecasts for the route.

The new service also gives travelers another option in a market where Gulf carriers have traditionally played a major role in connecting China to the Middle East, Africa, and Europe through one-stop networks.

Abu Dhabi positioning as a global destination

Beyond its role as a political and commercial center, Abu Dhabi continues to promote itself as a premium tourism destination blending cultural heritage with modern infrastructure.

The emirate is home to major attractions including the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, known for its white marble design, more than 80 domes, Swarovski crystal chandeliers, and the world’s largest hand-knotted carpet. On Saadiyat Island, Louvre Abu Dhabi has helped position the city as a cultural hub with a “universal museum” concept and rotating exhibitions.

Abu Dhabi’s entertainment offerings also support inbound travel demand. Ferrari World Abu Dhabi features the world’s fastest rollercoaster, while Yas Waterworld and Warner Bros. World Abu Dhabi target families and leisure travelers. The Yas Marina Circuit hosts the Formula One Etihad Airways Abu Dhabi Grand Prix each November, a key event on the city’s annual tourism calendar.

Outdoor and nature tourism remain central to the emirate’s brand, with the Corniche waterfront, Saadiyat Beach’s protected ecosystems, and desert experiences in the Rub’ al Khali near Liwa Oasis drawing visitors seeking both relaxation and adventure.

With the launch of Air China’s new 787-operated service, Abu Dhabi gains another direct connection to one of the world’s largest outbound travel markets, potentially supporting future growth in both business travel and tourism between the two capitals.
