PERTH — Emirates has expanded its Australian footprint with the deployment of its Airbus A380 equipped with premium economy seating on daily flights between Perth and Dubai, marking the fourth Australian city to receive the carrier’s upgraded cabin. The move comes as Perth records historic travel demand and earns recognition as the world’s highest-rated destination for travelers in 2024.

The premium economy product, now available on flights EK420 and EK421, is designed to serve passengers seeking elevated comfort without the cost of a business-class fare. As the airline describes it, “The offering aims to provide a midpoint for travellers who want a more comfortable journey but prefer not to commit to business class pricing.”

    A Fourth Cabin Class on a High-Traffic Long-Haul Route

Emirates’ decision to introduce the cabin on the Perth route follows encouraging results from other Australian stations where demand for the product has grown steadily. Positioned between economy and business class, premium economy offers greater space, enhanced amenities, and a more refined onboard experience aimed at long-haul travelers connecting through Dubai.

The cabin is situated at the front of the A380’s main deck and features upgraded seating with deeper recline, larger entertainment screens, a footrest, added storage, and a welcome drink on boarding. Each seat includes a 13.3-inch screen, in-seat charging, improved cushioning, and a side table—features tailored to flights of the Perth-to-Dubai sector’s length.

The updated four-class configuration on the A380 operating to Perth includes 14 first-class suites, 76 business-class seats, 56 premium economy seats, and 322 in economy. The layout supports Emirates’ extensive long-haul network connecting Western Australia to Europe, the Middle East, Africa, and the Americas.

A Boost for a Growing Aviation Market

The introduction arrives during a period of significant growth at Perth Airport. The facility recently recorded its busiest October for international and regional passengers, reflecting strong outbound and inbound demand as Western Australia deepens its global ties. Airport leaders have pointed to Emirates’ upgraded product as a timely enhancement that aligns with traveler expectations for more comfortable long-haul travel options.

Industry analysts say the move underscores Perth’s role as a strategic gateway for Western Australia’s tourism and business sectors, especially as more travelers connect through the state on long-distance itineraries.

Perth Ranked as the World’s Top Travel Destination

The airline’s investment coincides with new data showing Perth has been named the highest-rated global destination for travelers in 2024, according to a survey conducted by Flight Centre across five countries. Respondents ranked the city ahead of some of the world’s most established tourism hubs.

Perth’s top ranking surprised some industry observers given the city’s traditionally remote image and its distance from major international hubs. Yet its growing appeal reflects shifting traveler preferences toward destinations that offer clean environments, coastal access, cultural depth, and reliable weather—categories where Perth scores consistently well.

The city’s evolution from the 1829 Swan River Colony to a modern coastal capital has blended natural landscapes with strong economic activity. Mining and offshore energy operations have shaped much of the region’s growth, but Perth retains a relaxed character that appeals to a wide range of visitors.

    What’s Driving Perth’s Appeal

Western Australia’s capital offers a varied mix of experiences, from iconic natural attractions to cultural sites and culinary destinations.

Kings Park and Botanic Garden provides more than 400 hectares of landscaped grounds and bushland overlooking the city, while beaches along the west coast—led by Cottesloe, Scarborough, and Trigg—remain major drawcards for both locals and visitors.

Nearby Rottnest Island continues to attract travelers seeking cycling, snorkeling, and wildlife encounters, while destinations such as Nambung National Park’s Pinnacles Desert and the waterways of Mandurah offer additional options for outdoor exploration.

Cultural stops include the Perth Mint, the Art Gallery of Western Australia, and the nightlife district of Northbridge. Day-trip opportunities to Fremantle, Margaret River, and other regional destinations add further depth to the city’s tourism profile.

    Practical Travel Considerations

Perth maintains a reputation as a safe destination with a wide range of accommodation options from hostels to luxury hotels. Travelers can expect daily budgets ranging from around 120 AUD for backpackers to more than 500 AUD for luxury stays. Public transport through Transperth offers reliable connectivity across the city, supported by free CAT bus routes in central areas.

Spring and autumn provide the most comfortable conditions for visiting, while summer delivers prime beach weather alongside higher temperatures and prices.

As travel demand continues its upward trajectory, Emirates’ latest cabin upgrade positions Perth to further capitalize on its newfound global momentum and strengthen its appeal among long-haul travelers heading to and from Western Australia.
