AUCKLAND, New Zealand — Air New Zealand has resumed its seasonal Hobart service for a fifth consecutive summer, ramping up capacity and adding larger aircraft as passenger demand between New Zealand and Tasmania hits new highs.

The first flight of the 2025–26 season touched down Sunday, signaling an 11 percent capacity increase over last year. The airline is deploying its Airbus A321 on most services—six out of every ten flights—between Auckland (AKL) and Hobart (HBA). In total, the schedule adds more than 25,000 extra seats for travelers crossing the Tasman during the peak holiday months.

Boost for Tasmania’s Tourism and Economy

Hobart Airport Chief Operating Officer Matt Cocker said the additional capacity represents a major boost for Tasmania’s visitor economy and reflects growing confidence in the market.

“The expansion delivers a major boost to Tasmania’s tourism and travel sectors,” Cocker said. He confirmed that the 2025–26 schedule adds over 25,000 seats to the airport’s busiest summer period yet.

Cocker described the Auckland–Hobart connection as a “great success story,” noting that the route has evolved from government-supported beginnings into a commercially viable service driven by strong demand.

“It has evolved from government-supported beginnings into a commercially sustainable route with increasing popularity,” he said.

The trans-Tasman flights offer direct benefits to local businesses, tour operators, and hotels, while providing New Zealand visitors with access to Tasmania’s growing arts and culinary scenes.

    Steady Growth Since Launch

Air New Zealand’s General Manager of Short Haul Scott Smith said the airline has seen consistent growth since the route began in April 2021.

“Passenger numbers have strengthened consistently since the route launched in April 2021,” Smith said. He added that “strong, two-way demand continues to drive the route’s seasonal success.”

More than 80,000 passengers have now flown between Hobart and Auckland, reflecting what both airport and airline executives describe as sustained post-pandemic recovery and heightened interest in short-haul international travel.

    Gateway to Global Destinations

The Hobart–Auckland link gives Tasmanian travelers one-stop access to Air New Zealand’s long-haul network, including flights to New York (JFK), Los Angeles (LAX), and Fiji (NAN). This connectivity helps position Hobart as a regional gateway for both leisure and business travel, reducing the need for connecting through mainland Australian airports.

Hobart Airport is also investing heavily to prepare for growth. Its $200 million terminal expansion, scheduled for completion by 2027, will double passenger capacity and modernize facilities for airlines including Air New Zealand, Qantas, and Jetstar.

The 2025–26 summer is expected to be the airport’s busiest yet, supported by Qantas’s reinstated Perth (PER) service and new Jetstar routes to Newcastle (NTL).

    Flexible Schedule for Travelers

Air New Zealand’s seasonal NZ195 and NZ196 flights operate three times a week—on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Sundays—through March 29, 2026. The consistent schedule offers flexibility for both Tasmanian and New Zealand travelers, reinforcing the airline’s strong trans-Tasman presence.

The airline’s decision to upgauge to A321s underscores its commitment to the market. The narrow-body jets offer higher seating capacity and improved fuel efficiency, helping the carrier manage costs while meeting record summer demand.

    Hobart’s Tourism Appeal

Hobart, Tasmania’s capital, sits at the base of Mount Wellington and along the Derwent River, blending colonial heritage with modern art and dining. Its relaxed pace, compact downtown, and proximity to wilderness areas continue to draw international visitors.

Tourism Tasmania promotes the city as a blend of “old-world charm and modern creativity,” with attractions such as the Museum of Old and New Art (MONA), the Salamanca Market, and the scenic Bruny Island and Huon Valley within easy reach.

Major airlines including Qantas, Virgin Australia, and Jetstar provide domestic access to Hobart, which serves as a jumping-off point for exploring Tasmania’s mountains, coasts, and wildlife reserves.

    Outlook

Air New Zealand’s renewed investment in the Hobart route highlights broader optimism across the trans-Tasman market. Both Australia and New Zealand have seen international travel rebound faster than expected, with leisure and visiting-friends-and-relatives segments leading the recovery.

As Cocker summed up, the Hobart–Auckland connection has become “a great success story” for both destinations—proof that even one of the world’s most remote island states can attract strong global demand when the skies stay open.
