A poignant example is regional road No. 706 between Rich and Imilchil in the Midelt province. This road, rebuilt less than three years ago at a cost of tens of millions of dirhams, was literally swept away by the storm, sparking anger among residents and internet users.

Allegations of corruption and mismanagement are flooding social media. It is alleged that the work was sloppily done, that preparatory studies were inadequate and that the materials used were of poor quality. “Fraud in the construction of the road led to the collapse,” is a common response. The heavy rains only exposed what was already clear to many: public money had been wasted.

Fingers are being pointed at regional and provincial officials who approved and allowed these questionable practices to take place. This also raises questions about the quality of public infrastructure oversight and the fight against corruption across the sector.

The entire population of Midelt is now left with a dead end and a bitter feeling. Some Internet users are demanding answers and severe punishments for those responsible for this catastrophic failure.
