We all sometimes wonder: Do I earn enough? And then you measure your income, for example, with Dutch people of the same age or look at the level of education. But Statistics Netherlands (CBS) also conducted research on the distribution of income based on the country of birth of workers in the Netherlands.

Are you curious about salary by age and education level? You can find the latest figures in our previously published articles. We have also listed the associated potential for you.

    Income distribution in the Netherlands

The income distribution was investigated by Statistics Netherlands and published in the annual journal Monitoring the vast prosperityaccessible through the national government. The report covers various aspects of prosperity, including financial prosperity. The research was published in May this year. The analysis is based on household portfolios in 2022.

When it comes to income distribution in the Netherlands, the report looks at the standardized disposable income of each household. When analyzing characteristics such as age, education level or country of birth, the “main breadwinner” is examined; the person in the household who makes the largest financial contribution to the household income. The average standardized disposable income for all households is EUR 31,600. The median was EUR 35,400.

    💡The middle

CBS explains that the median refers to the middle number when all the numbers are sorted from lowest to highest. This is more representative than the average, because the average is disproportionately high due to outliers.

    💡Disposable income

In short, disposable income is your gross salary, minus premiums, income and asset taxes, plus social benefits and allowances.

Dutch income by country of birth

The research shows that families with a main breadwinner born in the Netherlands and whose parents were also born in the Netherlands have the highest income. The median for this group is €33,100. In families where the main breadwinner was born outside Europe, the average disposable income is lower, at €23,900. All income data by country of origin can be found in the table below.

Country of birth and origin Disposable income (average)
Born in the Netherlands, parents born in the Netherlands 33100 euros
Born in the Netherlands, parents in Europe 29,700 euros
Born in the Netherlands, parents outside Europe 30400 euros
Born in Europe (not in the Netherlands) 27500 euros
    born outside europe 23900 euros

    Assets by country of birth

In addition to income, assets were also taken into account. The average (median) wealth of Dutch households was €135,000 in 2022. It turns out that people born in the Netherlands, and with parents born in the Netherlands, have the highest wealth of all. Assets are the sum of assets and liabilities, which also includes home ownership. CBS explains that due to rising house prices, wealth disparities are also increasing.

Country of birth and origin Household Wealth (Average)
Born in the Netherlands, parents born in the Netherlands 188600 euros
Born in the Netherlands, parents in Europe 121,100 euros
Born in the Netherlands, parents outside Europe 18900 euros
Born in Europe (not in the Netherlands) 9000 euros
    born outside europe 3500 euros
