Despite the onslaught of free games offered by Epic Games, Steam remains the most popular distribution platform for PC games. This is also confirmed by a new user record: on Sunday, the mark of 37 million Steam users logging in at the same time was broken for the first time – Black Myth: Thanks to Wukong.
There were exactly 37,261,606 accounts online at the same time on August 25, 2024 at 4 p.m., marking a new high for “concurrent users” on Valve’s platform. The 35 million user mark was initially surpassed in early March, but just a few days later the previous record of around 36 million players was achieved.
Black Legend: Wukong is currently tying up a lot of players.
Undoubtedly, a popular new entry is at least partly responsible for the new Steam record: On August 20, the action role-playing game Black Myth: Wukong by Chinese indie studio Game Science was released. It captured the hearts of gamers at a rapid pace, capturing over 2 million concurrent players on its release day. To this day, the best-selling title is the most-played game, far outpacing the all-time leader Counter-Strike 2.
Black Myth: Wukong doesn’t just have a lot to offer graphically, it’s currently rated positively by 96 percent of buyers on Steam. On the rating platform Metacritic, the title currently has an 8.1 out of 10 possible points from test reports and a 7.4 out of 10 points from user reviews. Metascore and Userscore aren’t really great.
However, Black Myth: Wukong is undoubtedly one of the contenders for Game of the Year and has sold over 10 million copies in three days.
