Catania airport on the Italian island of Sicily has reopened after being closed for hours due to the eruption of Mount Etna, Italian media reported. The airport was forced to close this afternoon because the runway was covered in a layer of ash.
Planes were also covered in ash. The city of Catania itself suffered inconvenience.
Mount Etna has produced large clouds of ash and volcanic gas that have reached 9,500 metres (30,000 feet) in height. The airport has asked passengers not to come to the airport until the problems are resolved.
Catania airport often has to close when the volcano, the largest active volcano in Europe, is heard. Air traffic was already halted earlier this month due to the eruption.
Etna is one of the most active volcanoes in the world. It is even listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Steam is constantly released and eruptions occur regularly. Earlier this month, flights were also grounded due to the eruption.
