Sint Maarten Airport Closed Due to Tropical Storm Ernesto

    2024-08-12 – Reading time 2 minutes

PHILIPSBURG – Sint Maarten Airport will temporarily close its doors tomorrow due to the approach of Tropical Storm Ernesto. A spokesperson for Princess Juliana International Airport (PJIA) said the closure was imposed to ensure the safety of passengers, staff and airline employees.

It will be closed on Tuesday, August 13 at 10:00 a.m. and will remain closed throughout Wednesday, August 14. The airport is expected to be fully operational again on Thursday, August 15 at 7:00 a.m., depending on potential damage caused by Storm Ernesto.

Weather forecasts indicate that severe storms will seriously impact visibility and runway conditions, making it unsafe for aircraft to land or take off. “We have made this decision to prevent potential hazards and ensure the safety of everyone at the airport,” a PJIA spokesperson said.

Passengers are advised to contact their airlines directly for information regarding flight cancellations or rebooking. Additionally, the airport recommends following PJIA’s social media channels on Facebook and Instagram for the latest updates.

    Saba and Statia

Saba and Sint Eustatius are also bracing for Tropical Storm Ernesto. Public life will be suspended as of 12 noon Tuesday afternoon. Schools are closed.
