An American woman found chained in a forest in India last week appears to have tied herself up. She said she went without food or water for 40 days. It has been a mystery to police how she ended up there. Until now. “She did it to herself.”

Fifty-year-old Lalita Kay was rescued 10 days ago in a forest in western India. She had been chained to a tree. A local cattle farmer heard repeated cries for help from the edge of the forest. When the man followed the cries, he found the woman tied to a tree. “Her legs were tied to the tree. She was screaming like an animal,” the farmer says.

The cow farmer took immediate action. He called the police for help, among other things. After the police cut the chain, Kai, who was very weak and exhausted, was taken to the hospital.

    By her husband

When she was first rescued, Kay had not yet spoken to police. She communicated through notes in a diary. She told police that she was married to a man from South India. It was also said that her husband had tied her to the tree. She also claimed that she had gone 40 days without food or water. This seemed unbelievable to police. Police told the BBC: “It is unlikely that anyone could survive for that long without food or water.”

    Complete fabrication

Kay remained in the hospital for several days until her physical condition improved. She was then transferred to a psychiatric institution.

But how the woman ended up in the woods was unclear to police until she explained it herself. With her visa expired and her money running out, Kay said she was at a loss. She bought chains and padlocks and tied herself to a tree. She also told police she was unmarried.

The story she initially told the police turned out to be completely fabricated. She also explained why she did it. The police said she may have been hallucinating when she made her initial statement. Her health is now said to have improved again.
