Democratic Senator Bob Menendez, convicted of corruption, announced his resignation from office.

US media reported that Democratic Senator Bob Menendez, who was convicted of corruption, resigned from his position on Tuesday. After his conviction last week on bribery charges, proceedings were already underway to expel him from the Senate. Democrats have already nominated another candidate for the upcoming elections in November.

In his resignation letter read in the Senate on Tuesday, Menendez wrote that he “will appeal his conviction to the Supreme Court,” but that he does not want “the Senate to engage in a lengthy process that would distract from important work.”

Menendez, 70, and his wife were convicted last week of accepting cash, gold bullion, car payments and mortgage payments in exchange for arranging billions of dollars in U.S. aid to Egypt.

The Cuban-American politician has been at the highest levels of American politics for three decades and was one of the most powerful Democrats in Washington. Many in the party had already urged his departure last year because of the frightening electoral consequences of the case hanging over him.
