Flight QF33 landed in Paris on Saturday after a 16-hour, 27-minute flight from Perth. Qantas has pulled out all the stops for the new route. For example, a specially curated French menu was served and there were “limited edition” pyjamas and special amenity kits on board for business class passengers. The Boeing 787-9 (VH-ZNH) used by the Australians has 236 seats on board: 42 in business class, 28 in premium economy and 166 in economy.

“These new direct flights from Perth to Paris will reduce the current fastest travel time between the two cities by around three hours. The flight is particularly popular during the busy summer months,” said Catriona Larette, Qantas Group Chief Customer and Digital Officer.

Initially, Qantas will fly the route four times a week due to expected traffic during the holidays and the Olympics. In mid-August, when the Games are over, the frequency will return to three return flights a week. Passengers can also book “circular fares”, for example flying to Paris and back from London.

Qantas wants to start ultra-long-haul scheduled services in 2026 under the name Project Sunrise. This will initially involve the Sydney-London and Sydney-New York routes. More destinations are to follow. These will be the longest routes ever, with a flight time of around twenty hours.
