Sunshine, long days, vacations – many people love summer. But almost no one likes an apartment that is too warm. Life hacks can help.
Dortmund – It's been a long time coming this year, but at the end of June, summer has truly arrived. On some days in North Rhine-Westphalia, the 30 degree mark is expected to be broken. Especially after that, many people ask themselves how they can cool their apartment or at least the room.
Cool your home: The bottle trick ensures rapid cooling
If the apartment turns into an oven in the summer, the quality of life is greatly affected. If you don't have the money for an expensive air conditioning system, you can at least temporarily use a simple trick: a DIY ice bottle as a room cooler.
This is how the Summer Life hack works:
- Take a large PET bottle (1.5 or 2 liters).
- Fill the bottle about two-thirds full with water.
- Place the bottle in the refrigerator and wait until its contents are completely frozen.
- Place the frozen bottle at the highest point in the room, such as a cabinet or shelf.
- Bonus: Place the bottle in front of a fan to better distribute cool air throughout the room.

When the ice in the bottle melts, it releases cold air into the surrounding areas, cooling the room. To really feel the coolness, a fan can help distribute the cool air throughout the room.
This summer trick is much cheaper than expensive air conditioners and very easy to do. Additionally, the bottle can move from room to room if you decide to change rooms.
Cold apartment in summer: The ice in the bottle also has disadvantages
Despite some positive points, bottle life hacks can quickly reach their limits. The cooling capacity of a single PET bottle is of course very limited – the effect is hardly noticeable, especially in large rooms (more life hacks at RUHR24).
Additionally, it is only a temporary solution as the ice melts completely relatively quickly. Life hacking is also not particularly effective due to the electricity used by the ice chamber and fan. In situations where there are multiple people in one room, the body heat released can quickly exceed the cooling effect.
