On 25 June 2024, a ceremony marking the 50th anniversary of the Salzburg Society for National Defense and Security Policy (GLSS) was held at the Schwarzenberg Barracks in Salzburg. On this important occasion, the new President of the Association, Dr. We welcome Mr. Hans Rathgeb, high-level representatives from the Army, the Ministry of the Interior and State Policy as well as from interest groups, chambers, emergency organizations and authorities. Together they looked back at the achievements of the past five decades and discussed the challenges ahead.
High-profile speakers and guests of honor
The ceremony was marked by a series of lectures and speeches. Major General Dr. Peter Vorhofer from the Federal Ministry of Defense (BMLV) opened the speaker series with a detailed lecture on the challenges of current security policy and the role of the armed forces in the changing geopolitical landscape.
After that, the group leader, Dr. Wilhelm Sandresser of the Federal Ministry of the Interior (BMI). He stressed the importance of close cooperation between military and civilian security authorities, especially with regard to combating terrorism and organized crime. Sandresser stressed that continuous training and modern technological developments are essential factors for Austria's security.
Conclusion and expectations
The event concluded with a celebratory reception where guests had the opportunity to exchange ideas and network. It has become clear that the Salzburg Association for National Defense and Security Policy will remain an important platform for security policy discourse in the region in the coming years.
Over the past 50 years, the GLSS has made a significant contribution to enhancing the understanding and acceptance of security policy issues and anchoring comprehensive national defence in society. With a clear vision of future challenges, it is ideally equipped to continue making a valuable contribution to strengthening Austria’s resilience.
