Libya is participating in the “African Lion 2024” military maneuvers scheduled to be held in Morocco at the end of this month.
An official Libyan military source told Hespress news service. The participation comes after an invitation from the United States, which recently sent a delegation from the US military command in Africa (AFRICOM) to Libya.
According to the source, Libya wants to prove its presence and ability to contribute to achieving security in the region, which faces great challenges such as wars, divisions, and the presence of Russian mercenaries in several African countries.
Libya itself also faces political and security challenges, and wants, through its military branches, to participate in international efforts to address the threats posed by extremist groups and organized crime.
The US Army announced that about 700 National Guard soldiers will participate in the “African Lion 2024” exercises, which are believed to be the largest of their kind in North Africa. A US military official said that the exercises would improve cooperation and the efficiency of the armed forces of the participating countries.
The exercises will include training on the use of the Javelin anti-tank missile system, which the United States recently sold to Morocco for $260 million. The training will take place in several Moroccan cities and regions, such as Agadir, Tan-Tan, Mahbas, Kenitra and Tafnit, from May 20 to 31.
